The South African Embassy in Oslo wishes all women of our country a happy and meaningful Women’s Day!

Every year in August, we pay tribute the 20,000 courageous women of different races and backgrounds who, in 1956, marched against the apartheid government’s extension of pass laws to women. Their struggle for freedom, human rights, and social justice paved the way for our nation’s democracy and the o empowerment of women.

This year's Women's Day commemoration marks the 70th anniversary of that historic march under the theme:
“Empowered Women, Empower Nations.”

May this day inspire the new generation of South African women to emulate the courage and determination of the women of 1956 as they address the challenges faced by women today and lead the way to a better South Africa for all.

The Embassy commemorated Nelson Mandela Day a day earlier, on 17 July 2026. Our 67 Minutes were well spent at Majorstuen Seniorarena; we helped clean their garden so the elderly can enjoy a clean and tidy outdoor space.

🇿🇦🇳🇴 Honouring the Power of Our Youth: Happy Youth Day 2026! 🇳🇴🇿🇦

As 16 June draws to a close here in Norway, the South African Embassy in Oslo pauses to reflect on a defining moment in our nation's history. Today, we honor the brave students of the 1976 Soweto Uprising who stood up against the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools.

Their courage laid the foundation for the democracy we enjoy today.
This year marks the 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee) of the symbolic struggle, a national milestone which will be commemorated through a year-long programme to honour the legacy of the class of 1976.

From South Africa to Norway and across the globe, young people are leading the charge in innovation, climate action, social justice, and cultural exchange.
To the South African youth living, studying, and working here in Norway, you are our ambassadors of hope and the bridges connecting our two nations.

Let us continue to invest in, listen to, and uplift our youth, not just today, but every day.

The 2026 commemoration is held under the theme “RESET@50 – The Future Calls”, with the slogan “Our National Commitment to the Future, for Freedom Lives in Every Generation”, and is further anchored by the focus “Mapping the Barriers: Auditing Access for Economic Inclusion”.
