Nagdhunga Tunnel: A New Chapter in Nepal’s Infrastructure .

Nagdhunga Tunnel Construction Project marks a historic milestone in Nepal’s development. As Nepal’s first modern road tunnel, it represents a major step forward in advanced infrastructure and highlights strong cooperation between Nepal and Japan.

The tunnel is expected to ease highway congestion, open new travel opportunities, and significantly reduce travel time and fuel consumption. It is also expected to lower carbon emissions and improve overall road safety, paving the way for a more efficient and sustainable transportation system in Nepal.

Strengthening Aviation Safety in Nepal: JICA President Dr. Akihiko Tanaka at Tribhuvan International Airport.

On Tuesday 28 July 2026, Dr. Akihiko Tanaka toured the JICA-supported civil aviation safety facilities at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) and observed the proposed site for the new Air Traffic Control Tower, which is planned to be supported through JICA Grant Aid.

On the occasion, the Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), Mr. Mukesh Dangol, highly appreciated JICA's support for the installation of radar systems at TIA and Bhattedanda as well as its efforts in building the capacity of CAAN and TIA staff, describing it as vital and transformative cooperation for the development of Nepal's aviation sector. Mr. Dangol also explained the need for further JICA support to expand aviation safety to other parts of Nepal.

Dr. Tanaka was on a Nepal visit between 26-29 July 2026.

Bridging Cultures, Building Futures: Welcoming JICA Volunteers to Nepal.

On 27 July 2026 JICA Nepal welcomed 2 new JICA volunteers to Nepal.

With fresh energy and diverse expertise, these dedicated individuals are ready to make a meaningful impact across communities throughout the country.

Their arrival marks the beginning of exciting, innovative projects focused on sustainable development and enriching everyday lives. After completing their local language training in Kathmandu, the volunteers will be dispatched to their respective host organizations, where they’ll begin their journey alongside Nepali counterparts.

We not only wish for their safety and good health but also hope their time in Nepal fosters deep mutual understanding and strong friendships at the grassroots level.

Over the past 56 years, 1,468 volunteers have contributed to Nepal’s development—and the journey continues!

JICA President Engages with JICA Nepal Staff and Recognizes Long-Serving National Staff.

During his visit to Nepal, JICA President Dr. TANAKA Akihiko held an interactive session with the National Staff of the JICA Nepal Office, exchanging views on Nepal’s development priorities, key challenges, and future cooperation opportunities. The discussion focused on ongoing and future initiatives to support Nepal’s sustainable development and strengthen human resources and organizational capacity.

A special highlight of the gathering was the recognition of three senior National Staff members who have made outstanding and long-term contributions to JICA Nepal. Dr. Tanaka felicitated them for their unwavering commitment, exemplary leadership, and tireless efforts throughout their careers. Their dedication has not only contributed significantly to the success of JICA’s programs in Nepal but has also left a lasting legacy in strengthening Nepal–Japan relations and supporting the country’s development journey.

The occasion served as a meaningful celebration of teamwork, institutional excellence, and the people behind decades of successful development cooperation.

JICA President Meets Students at JICA Rebuilt Patan Secondary School .

On Monday 27 July 2026, Dr. TANAKA Akihiko visited Patan Secondary School, which was reconstructed under JICA’s Emergency School Reconstruction Project following the devastation caused by the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake. The school buildings are aesthetically designed to reflect historical architectural elements.

During the visit, he interacted with students and teachers, observed the activities of Japanese Overseas Cooperation Volunteers Ms. Inka Angelina Nakamoto, who is serving at the school, and toured the rebuilt facilities.

The visit highlighted the lasting impact of Nepal-Japan cooperation in the volunteers and education sector and its contribution to fostering a grassroots support and creating a safer and more conducive learning environment for future generations.

Altogether 274 disaster resilient schools were built following the principle of “Build Back Better (BBB)” across six districts - Gorkha Dhading, Nuwakot, Makwanpur, Rasuwa and
Lalitpur and Reconstruction of 11 earthquake affected schools in Jajarkot district is currently underway.

JICA President Holds Strategic Meetings with Nepal’s Ministers to Advance Bilateral Cooperation.

JICA President Dr. TANAKA Akihiko during his Nepal visit between 26-29 July held high-level meetings with Hon. Dr. Swarnim Wagle, Minister of Finance, Hon. Mr. Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation and Hon. Mr. Sunil Lamsal, Minister for Infrastructure Development.

Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in key development sectors, reviewing ongoing initiatives, and exploring new opportunities aligned with Nepal’s national priorities.

Dr. Tanaka recalled his previous visit to Nepal following the devastating 2015 Gorkha Earthquake and expressed his admiration for Nepal’s progress and resilience over the past decade. He also highlighted the significance of 2026, which marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Nepal.

The meetings reaffirmed Japan’s longstanding support in infrastructure, transport, water supply, energy, irrigation, disaster risk reduction, and human resource development, while underscoring a shared commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation for Nepal’s sustainable growth and prosperity.

JICA extends scholarship for Governmental officials through Grant Assistance in “The Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS)”.

The Government of Nepal, the Government of Japan, and JICA signed a Grant Agreement for the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) FY2026, worth JPY 410 million, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening Nepal’s civil service through advanced education and capacity development.

The agreement was signed in the presence of the Hon. Finance Minister, Dr. Swarnim Wagle and JICA President Dr. TANAKA Akihiko, who is currently visiting Nepal.

The JDS program provides 20 master’s degree scholarships and 2 doctoral scholarships annually for Nepalese civil servants to study at prestigious universities in Japan. Since its introduction in 2016, the program has empowered more than 231 Nepali government officials with advanced knowledge and leadership skills.

By nurturing future leaders in key areas such as public administration, economic policy, and governance, the JDS program contributes to Nepal’s social and economic development while further strengthening the longstanding partnership between Nepal and Japan.

Nagdhunga Tunnel Project Marks Completion, Ushering in a New Era of Transport Connectivity in Nepal .

The Nagdhunga Tunnel Project, Nepal’s first road tunnel, was officially inaugurated today in the presence of Hon. Mr. Sunil Lamsal, Minister for Infrastructure Development, H.E. Mr. MAEDA Toru, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal and Dr. TANAKA Akihiko, President of JICA.

Dr. TANAKA Akihiko, President of JICA is currently on a 3-day visit to Nepal.

Constructed with a Japanese ODA Loan of NPR 22.336 billion through JICA, the 2.68-km tunnel marks a historic milestone in Nepal’s infrastructure development. The tunnel will significantly improve connectivity between Kathmandu Valley and the rest of the country by reducing travel time, easing traffic congestion, enhancing road safety, and avoiding landslide-prone sections of the highway.

Built to international safety standards, the tunnel includes a dedicated evacuation tunnel, advanced ventilation, lighting, communication, and monitoring systems. The project also represents a breakthrough in technology transfer, with Nepali engineers and workers gaining valuable experience in tunnel construction.

The Nagdhunga Tunnel stands as a symbol of the enduring partnership between Nepal and Japan and a gateway to safer, faster, and more sustainable transportation.

Launch of the Integrated Maternal and Child Health Handbook Pilot Implementation in Gandaki and Lumbini Provinces.

On 20 July (Gandaki Province) and 22 July (Lumbini Province), the Ministry of Health and Food Safety, the Gandaki and Lumbini Province Governments, and JICA successfully launched the Integrated Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook Initiative’s Pilot Implementation.

The launch events were held under the guardianship of the Hon’ble Ministers of Health, Mr Laxman Bahadur Pandey and Mr Ramjee Prasad Ghimire, chairmanship of health secretaries with participation of different level stakeholders.

During the events, Dr Gauri Pradhan Shrestha, MNH Section Chief of Family Welfare Division and Project Manager, shared the progress updates and pilot implementation plan. The first MCH Handbooks were symbolically handed over to pregnant women, and essential maternal and child health equipment was officially handed over to the provinces by JICA.

Mr Mizuki Matsuzaki, Chief Representative of JICA Nepal Office, and Ms Keiko Osaki, Senior Advisor of Health at JICA Headquarters, expressed their hope that the MCH Handbook will become a trusted companion for mothers, children, and families across Nepal, supporting their lives and brighter futures.

The project will move forward to the pilot implementation in Gandaki and Lumbini Provinces from August. We look forward to continuing our strong collaboration with federal, provincial, and local governments to strengthen maternal and child health services in Nepal.

Thank you for being part of this milestone journey. Together, we look forward to the opening of the Nagdhunga Tunnel and a new era of safer, faster, and more efficient connectivity for Nepal.

The event brought together more than 440 enthusiastic participants from diverse backgrounds.

More than just a run and walk, the event offered a unique opportunity to experience Nepal’s first road tunnel, while celebrating the strong partnership between Nepal and Japan that made this transformative project possible.
