As the year draws to a close, this is a gentle reminder that we are warmly welcoming applications for the 2027 Kotahitanga Korikori DTNZ Scholarship! 🌿

The kaupapa of this scholarship is to provide up to $5,000 to support two tauira Māori studying a Diploma of Dance Movement Therapy programme or a Master of Dance Movement Therapy.

If you whakapapa Māori, have experience doing mahi within your community, and carry a heartfelt drive to support Māori kiritaki (clients) through a Dance Movement Therapy practice, we would love to hear from you.

Note for tauira studying with Dance Therapy Training Aotearoa (DTTA): Please ensure you have completed the prerequisite Introduction to DMT online workshop, running Friday 6th – Sunday 8th November 2026.

Reflections from our sessions ✨

During an Arts 4 Us session, Theo shared something he had learned at school: how different colours can represent different feelings.

As the group explored making animal masks, he talked about red, yellow, blue and green, and the emotions he associated with each. Red for anger, worry. Yellow for feeling anxious or excited. Blue for sad, tired or lonely. Green for calm, thankful and focused.

Later, without deliberately setting out to illustrate those feelings, Theo painted his lion mask in stripes of all four colours.

It was a lovely moment of connection between the group’s conversation and his own creative expression. Art offered another way to explore and depict feelings, alongside words.

In Arts 4 Us, participants are invited to explore materials and express themselves at their own pace.

Our Embracing Your Body Yoga & Movement Retreat brings together gentle, trauma-sensitive yoga and dance movement therapy in a small, supportive group.

Experienced dance movement therapists Jung-Hsu Wan and Clare Etherton will guide and support you throughout the retreat. Clare is also an experienced yoga teacher with specialist expertise in trauma-informed yoga. You’ll be invited to explore movement at your own pace and choose how you take part.

The retreat is for women aged 18 and over and is offered through ACC Sensitive Claims.

Date: Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 November 2026
Time: 10am–4pm
Location: Henderson, Auckland

You’re welcome to ask questions before deciding to join us. We can talk you through what to expect, how the small group works and the support you’ll have throughout.

Places for the November retreat are limited. If you miss out or the dates don’t suit, we have more groups running in 2027.

Mental Health Week is an important reminder to pause and give our mental well-being the attention it deserves.

This year’s theme, Belonging Matters, grounded in the whakataukī Ko au ko koe, ko koe ko au (I am you, and you are me). It reminds us that genuine connection, inclusion, and community are powerful protective factors against loneliness and key to our wellbeing.

For anyone constantly navigating environments that disable, shrink, or make you feel invisible, fitting in can be deeply exhausting. It can leave you feeling like you have to change who you are just to belong.

At DTNZ, we create supportive "YES" spaces—environments built to enable rather than disable.

At the heart of arts and dance movement therapy is the belief that there is no "right" or "wrong" way to move, paint, or just be. In a "YES" space, you are free to play, create, and connect on your own terms, supported by a community that accepts you as you are.

Moving your way. Making art your way. Belonging as your whole self.

This is what we do here every single day.

Find a safe, empowering space to move, create, and connect this term. Dance and Art Therapy NZ offers accessible and inclusive art and movement programmes designed to support diverse needs, abilities, and lived experiences across Aotearoa.

Discover Our Term 4 Programmes:

STARS (Dance Movement Therapy): Fun, active, and inclusive workshops where tamariki and rangatahi with disabilities can experience the joy of dance, be completely themselves, and express their unique STAR qualities! (Welcoming new tamariki in Howick & Mt Albert!)

Arts 4 Us (Group Art Therapy): A drop-in group arts therapy programme for school-aged children. Art is used as a medium to aid self-esteem and confidence, strengthen self-identity, and develop art skills. (Welcoming new participants in Ōrākei!)

Dance 4 Us (Youth & Adults 15+): Dynamic dance movement therapy groups for people aged 15+ with cognitive, physical, and neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Arts 4 All (Youth & Adults 15+): Creative arts therapy groups for people aged 15+ with cognitive, physical, and neurodevelopmental disabilities.

We also offer Individual & Clinical Therapy (All Ages): 1-on-1 personalised arts and movement therapy, including specialised support for trauma recovery.
