Whītau School It is exciting times at Whītau School for a number of reasons, one of those being the major school redevelopment.

Whītau School is a contributing primary school in the east of Christchurch providing ‘Focused Learning Achieving eXcellence’; with our school’s vision ‘Learning to take us places…’ and our values of Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be a Learner. All building work has been completed so students enjoy safe, state-of-the art learning spaces that are designed for 21st century learning with plans in place for landscaping and new playgrounds.

Here is our amazing Kapa Haka rōpū getting ready to take the stage at Tūhono on Saturday. Huge congratulations to everyone involved, and a special mihi to Whaea Aleisha, Ms Ioane, Matua DJ, Whaea Horiana and Matua Maaka, as well as our wonderful parent helpers, Anahera and Loa. Look at all those happy faces! Our whole kura has had a fantastic week of swimming at AquaGym.

Our kaiako have shared stories of so many special milestones throughout the week: first time putting their head under the water, first length, first dive and plenty of moments of courage and confidence along the way.

A massive thank you to the AquaGym team, our office staff, kaiako and kaiāwhina for all their mahi in helping the week run so smoothly.

We’ll continue our swimming lessons at kura next week, so there is plenty more fun in the water to come! What a great time to be at kura!

Bilum Competition Winners!

Halo olgeta Whītau School,

As per our newsletter, last week we celebrated Papua Niugini Tok Pisin Language Week at our school. We had so many entries into our bilum design competition; our judges found it hard!

Natasha Lidgett (Alfred, R13 mum) and her sister struggled to find only 2 winner, but they made their final decisions!

Congratulations to Alia S (Room 10) and Nevaniah F (Room 11) - you both have won a bilum donated by the Lidgett family.

A special mention to Room 5 and Miss D for their efforts in our bilum design competition each language week; Room 5 always giving their best efforts individually and as a whole class.

Nau mai ki Te Wiki o te Reo Māori! Welcome to Māori Language Week!

Whaea Aleisha has some extra-special activities planned throughout the week, including new kupu, bingo, a colouring competition and a Kahoot competition. Thank you for your mahi, Whaea Aleisha!

As well as celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, our whole kura is going swimming this week! Please remember to pack your togs and a towel. A massive mihi to Mrs Heads for all her organising of swimming.

Another action-packed week here at Whītau: it is great to be at kura!

At Whītau School, our learning takes us places, and this week, it’s taking us to Ferrymead Heritage Park.

This week, every class in the kura will have the opportunity to visit Ferrymead as part of our inquiry learning. The photos show our senior ākonga from Kōrari getting ready for the big day!

These trips are connected to our inquiry unit, “Change Markers: Making a Difference in Our Place.” It’s fantastic to see our ākonga learning beyond the classroom, exploring our local history and making connections to the world around them.

A massive mihi to all of our kaiako and parent helpers who have made these trips possible. We couldn’t do it without you!

What a great day to be at kura! Looking forward to seeing the photos from the trip. I am sure they will be in newsletter.
