A huge thank you to our amazing Hedgehope School PTA for subsidising an action-packed day for our students!

Our students had a fantastic time hitting the slopes at The Remarkables, while others enjoyed ice skating and pickleball in Gore.

We are incredibly grateful to our PTA for helping make these opportunities possible for our students. Your support makes a real difference and allows our kids to experience and enjoy activities that they may not otherwise get the chance to do.

Another successful afternoon at Sherwood Forest, with 19 students taking part in a rewarding session of conservation and discovery.

The day included monitoring our trap lines, resulting in the removal of one rat, while our game camera captured an exciting sighting of a ruru (morepork). Students also investigated an interesting find on a mataī tree, discovering that the striking red markings were actually its inner bark exposed beneath the outer layer.

Technology played its part too, with Google Lens helping students identify a Black Beetle and verify their findings to ensure they had correctly identified the species. This provided a great opportunity to combine curiosity, observation, and scientific investigation.

The day concluded with w**d suppression around our eco-sourced plantings, helping to ensure our young native trees have the best opportunity to thrive.

It was fantastic to see so many students and staff wearing yellow to support Harold and the valuable work of the Life Education Trust. Thanks to the generosity of our school community, we raised $99.30 in donations.

Look at this amazing design from Hedgehope School student Rylan Hall. After years talking about designing a logo, Hedgehope Makarewa Catchment Group decided to ask their local school and got some AMAZING designs ❤️

The students spent some time with Hokonui Runanga Inc picking their brains about the local connection for the catchment, and the legend of Matamata - the shapeshifting taniwha who rests in the Hokonui Hills at East Peak - captured their imaginations, along with the Makarewa Falls, the Hedgehope Stream, and the Makarewa River

Next step is to get it made into a Catchment Group sign and pop it up at their local hall, and hopefully find funding to get a few more made to put up locally and help promote their group

On the eve of Philippines Independence Day, our Filipino students proudly shared and taught a traditional game with us. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate culture, encourage participation, and learn from one another. Thank you to our student leaders for sharing this special part of their heritage with such confidence and enthusiasm.

On Friday, 17 students attended Sherwood Forest, representing a great mix of ages and experience. It was another successful day of exploration, discovery, and hands-on conservation learning.

Highlights included examining mummified stoats, observing erratic vagrant spiders, and investigating a range of other natural wonders found throughout the forest. Students also explored seed dispersal, examining how seeds and plant material attached to leaves can be spread throughout the forest. Creativity was on display as students designed and made nature-inspired headdresses.

Our conservation work continued with the maintenance of existing trap lines and the setting of game cameras to help monitor wildlife activity in the area.

A big thank you to Mo Topham, Annabel Anderson, and Jane Poole for their support and assistance throughout the day. Their help made another successful Sherwood Forest mission possible.

Our Year 5/6 and Year 7/8 students represented Hedgehope School with pride at the annual Central Cup basketball, soccer, volleyball, and netball tournament.

The Year 7/8 team had a strong day, winning 2 of their 4 matches, while the Year 5/6 team recorded 1 win, 1 draw, and 2 losses. While the results were pleasing, the most impressive aspect of the day was the way our students demonstrated our REACH values through their outstanding sportsmanship, teamwork, encouragement, and respect for opponents and officials.

The students were excellent ambassadors for our school, showing that success is measured not only by results but also by the way we conduct ourselves on and off the court and field. Well done to all involved!
