Hedgehope School

Hedgehope School A rural school in the heart of Southland. A place where our students are 'Reaching for Greatness' in their learning.

Hedgehope School is a small rural school in the centre of Southland, New Zealand. Our students are motivated, engaged and excited about creating learning opportunities that are modelled and extended by enthusiastic and passionate teaching staff. The school grounds are extensive, the classrooms are dynamic for learning and ICT use is becoming part of our learning day. Student voice is highly valued

as we grow confident, connected and curious leaders. Our students 'REACH' up with our values of Respect, Excellence, Aroha, Collaboration and Hauora. We are all 'REACHING FOR GREATNESS!'

We are proud of our GREAT little school community!

We wish the best of luck to Maci Wilson representing Hedgehope today at the Southland Cross Country Championships.

On the eve of Philippines Independence Day, our Filipino students proudly shared and taught a traditional game with us. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate culture, encourage participation, and learn from one another. Thank you to our student leaders for sharing this special part of their heritage with such confidence and enthusiasm.

On Friday, 17 students attended Sherwood Forest, representing a great mix of ages and experience. It was another successful day of exploration, discovery, and hands-on conservation learning.

Highlights included examining mummified stoats, observing erratic vagrant spiders, and investigating a range of other natural wonders found throughout the forest. Students also explored seed dispersal, examining how seeds and plant material attached to leaves can be spread throughout the forest. Creativity was on display as students designed and made nature-inspired headdresses.

Our conservation work continued with the maintenance of existing trap lines and the setting of game cameras to help monitor wildlife activity in the area.

A big thank you to Mo Topham, Annabel Anderson, and Jane Poole for their support and assistance throughout the day. Their help made another successful Sherwood Forest mission possible.

Our Year 5/6 and Year 7/8 students represented Hedgehope School with pride at the annual Central Cup basketball, soccer, volleyball, and netball tournament.

The Year 7/8 team had a strong day, winning 2 of their 4 matches, while the Year 5/6 team recorded 1 win, 1 draw, and 2 losses. While the results were pleasing, the most impressive aspect of the day was the way our students demonstrated our REACH values through their outstanding sportsmanship, teamwork, encouragement, and respect for opponents and officials.

The students were excellent ambassadors for our school, showing that success is measured not only by results but also by the way we conduct ourselves on and off the court and field. Well done to all involved!

A fantastic day at Sherwood Forest with 14 students involved in hands-on environmental learning and conservation.

Our first task was suppressing the grasses overtaking our ecosourced seedlings to help give them the best chance to thrive. We then maintained our trap lines, recording 5 rats and 1 ferret—an important step in protecting our native biodiversity.

The day was full of discovery, using Google Lens to identify some amazing finds including scarlet pouch fungi, Piwakawaka nests, wolf spiders, wētā, and even stoat skulls.

To finish, we investigated the distribution of bidibids. Thanks for Mo Topham and Annabel Anderson for helping out.

We are incredibly proud of our students' achievements at todays Cross Country event. An outstanding nine students finished in the top five placings in the Junior Fun Run , while 15 Hedgehope students aged 8–13 years qualified for the Central Zone Cross Country Championships in Dipton. A special mention to Maci Wilson who won the 10 year old girls race.

These fantastic results reflect the commitment and determination shown by our students throughout their training. Two challenging training sessions on Jones Hill helped build fitness, resilience and confidence, while the competitive spirit of running for their house motivated students to push themselves and work hard.

We congratulate all competitors on their efforts and wish our Central Zone qualifiers all the very best for Dipton.
