What’s your favourite Arrowtown winter memory? 🏔️

This old image shows Buckingham Street blanketed in snow during the winter of 1934. A pretty special glimpse of our little town in winter days gone by.

With school holidays sneaking up, Arrowtown is a pretty easy place to keep the kids entertained.

You can explore local favourites like the museum and library, head out on the biking trails, or let them burn off some energy at the skate park and pump track. Wander through the Chinese Settlement, find a park or green space to roam, and see where the day takes you.

And when everyone needs a bit of a reset, there are plenty of spots for a sweet treat, or you can catch a movie at the cutest little cinema.

A day in Arrowtown can be as busy or as slow as you need it to be, which is exactly what school holidays call for.

Arrowtown’s calling…

One of our two iconic red telephone boxes have become part of the town’s character, tucked into the historic streets like small reminders of another era.

They might not be needed for phone calls quite like they once were, but they still do a pretty good job of stopping people in their tracks and one of Arrowtown’s favourite photo stops.

A cooler day doesn’t have to mean staying indoors.

In fact, it can be one of the best times to get out on two wheels. Crisp air, quieter trails, and a good excuse to stop somewhere warm afterwards.

Arrowtown has easy access to some beautiful rides, whether you’re after a gentle cruise along the river or a bigger adventure on the trails. If you are visiting, local spots like Arrowtown Bike Hire and Better By Bike can help get you sorted, including e-bikes for a little extra help on the hills.

Layer up, pick a trail, and make a day of it. Then finish back in town with a hot drink, a cosy corner, or a fireplace to thaw out beside.

Arrowtown is a town that has always held its history close.

And right at the heart of that story is the Lakes District Museum & Gallery, a place that has helped preserve and share the stories of this region for generations.

The Museum was established in 1948, first opening in the now-demolished former billiard rooms of the Ballarat Hotel (seen in the third image, beside what is now Kathryn Wilson Footwear and the Arrowtown Bakery). In 1955, it moved to its current home in the heritage-listed former Bank of New Zealand building on Buckingham Street.
Today, it is home to more than 30,000 objects, photographs, documents and artworks that help tell the story of the Queenstown Lakes District, from the gold rush days through to the changing townscapes and communities we know today.

For visitors, it’s one of the best places to spend a little time and feel more connected to Arrowtown and the wider region. For locals, it’s a reminder of how much has been saved, remembered and cared for over the years.
