Industry Leaders: What Defines Great Architecture || Wednesday 26 August || 1730 - 1900 || MC Beach St

In a landscape like ours, the finest homes don't compete with the view. They defer to it.

As Queenstown builds at pace, the real measure of great design isn't how much you can put on a site, but how quietly and confidently a home can sit within it.

We're joined by Fearon Hay, one of New Zealand's most awarded practices and a 2024 Architectural Digest AD100 studio, known for a deep respect for site and place and a restraint that lets the landscape prevail. You'll see it close to home in MC member Matt Chapman's Edge of the World estate, a contemporary shepherd's hut in cedar, glass and concrete that sits so quietly little else of the built world remains in view.

Facilitated by Paddy Kluts, this is a conversation on the craft behind considered, luxury design and what it takes to build something that lasts.

Could Queenstown become a blue zone? That question filled the room at our latest Industry Leaders, digging into what it would take for our corner of the world to become one of the healthiest and most connected places on earth. Exactly the kind of conversation Mountain Club was built for.

A big thank you to our panel, Dr Adam Castricum, Nadia Lim, Damien Chaparro and Dominic Bowden for sharing their views and insights on this fascinating subject, and Paddy Kluts asking the questions.

A few lines that stayed with us:

Nadia - "You can't engineer a blue zone. But we could create the conditions from which the characteristics of a blue zone could emerge." And the biggest lever for that? The research on happiness comes down to the size of the inequality gap, and affordable housing would move the dial most.

Dom - Community cannot be manufactured. "It's something very authentic and very real. And Queenstown has an identity crisis where it could lose it very easily." Creating places for people to linger is where a real blue zone starts.

Every month Mountain Club's Industry Leaders events bring together experts across sectors to share insight, challenge assumptions, and create future-focused conversations that matter. Discover these amongst our 300+ events for members every year.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy just became legal medicine in New Zealand. Dr Pragati Gautama and Grace Cooper are two of the clinicians leading the charge.

In our latest Mountain Club Podcast episode, host Paddy sits down with two of our MC members, Pragati and Grace for a conversation on the personal motivations behind their work, the history and science of psychedelics, and what this new framework means for the future of mental health care in New Zealand.

Pragati brings more than 30 years in medicine as a GP and rural hospital specialist, Grace a nursing and counselling background and her own story of healing through this work. They dive into what the treatments for different drugs involve, and explain how it works on trauma, addiction, and depression, offering real hope where other treatments have failed.

Thank you Pragati and Grace for this exciting look at where mental health care is headed. This is a hopeful listen on regulation, healing, and the future of psychedelic medicine in New Zealand.

How I Built This with Dr Harriet Watkins and Mason Kingdom || Thursday 13 August || 1300 - 1400 || MC Beach St

How I Built This is our new event strand on the failures and triumphs of scaling a business, told by the Mountain Club members living it. A raw, honest, quick-fire format. Two founders, seven minutes each to share the lessons behind their business, then open Q&A.

First up, two very different journeys. Dr Harriet Watkins, founder of Dr Watkins' Essentials, swapped a career in biochemistry research for building a range of all-natural skincare, cleaning, and laundry products, born from her own health journey and a belief in keeping things as close to nature as possible.

Then Mason Kingdom, founder of Mason's Queenstown. After a decade working with luxury cars and their owners, Mason moved to Arrowtown and turned a mobile detailing business into a Glenda Drive workshop specialising in protection and restoration, now helping the next generation of detailers get off the ground.

Come with questions, this one is built for the room.

The past fortnight at Mountain Club.

The Professional Builder s' crew took over Beach St for a full-day takeover with boardroom sessions, Women in Construction, and a mix and mingle that packed the club with 100+ of the industry's best. Then Matariki gifted us all a long weekend to slow down with the people who matter.

The first workshop in our AI Series sold out, with Anthony Grant leading a hands-on Claude Cowork deep dive at Five Mile, focusing on real projects, real workflows, and questions answered by one of our own. 7th Heaven Wines joined us from Bannockburn for a tasting session built around good pinot and even better conversation, and MyHR's Sylvie Thrush Marsh gave people leaders practical tools for managing medical incapacity with care and confidence.

The weekly rhythm rolled on: 7am ski tours up Coronet with sunrise turns on the way down, Reform Queenstown Pilates keeping us moving, and Beach St Cafe keeping the coffees flowing through it all.

Further afield, global member James Cooper has been making himself at home at our affiliate clubs in Singapore.

Ideas, connection, and good people. Just another fortnight at Mountain Club. Not a member yet? We'd love to show you around. Reach out to [email protected] to find out more. 300+ events a year. Global network. Brilliant people

The place we call home is built for experiences like this.

In just over six weeks, Snow Machine returns to Queenstown for its fifth edition - four days of music and snow sports across our two ski fields, the town centre, and the alpine peaks around us. Chet Faker, Example, Hilltop Hoods, Nora En Pure, and a lineup of 30+ artists across 8 stages.

Only a handful of places in the world could host something like this. Queenstown has two ski fields within twenty minutes of town, alpine terrain across the doorstep, and a community that shows up for the good stuff.

Our signature experience, Mountain Club x Snow Machine: The Ultimate Alpine Experience, is a four-day alpine adventure blending insider festival access, a full-day heli-ski backcountry day with Harris Mountains Heli-Ski, VIP arena hospitality, private meet the artist events and Mountain Club's signature touch points throughout. Built for the people who want the whole experience — the mountains, the moments, and doing cool s**t with cool people.

Impact100 Whakatipu: Untold Stories returns to Mountain Club, this time with Julie Scott.

Julie found her calling in the for-purpose sector in 2007. What began as an unexpected career shift became 19 years leading the local community housing trust. Her story is one of navigating different worlds while staying grounded in purpose, and of learning that leadership is less about influence and more about creating opportunities for others, fostering collaboration, and having the stomach to take on the challenges that matter.

Wednesday 29 July || 1700 - 1900 || MC Beach St. Join us for a relaxed evening with people who want to hear real stories from incredible women in the community.

Part of your Mountain Club membership is the opportunity to not just attend events, but to host and lead them. Last Wednesday, Anthony Grant led our first AI Workshop Series, with a hands-on Claude Cowork session at MC Five Mile.

He stripped AI back to its essentials, showing that every AI tool is the same simple loop of context in, an agent working through a plan, and a real output at the end. A small room of founders, marketers, lawyers, consultants and more brought workflows from their own businesses and built as they learned.

If you have knowledge worth sharing, membership puts the right room in front of you.

Mountain Club is teaming up with Black Crows NZ for a crew ski and demo day at Coronet Peak on Saturday 1st August. A morning built around getting the MC community on snow together, with the chance to skin, ski, and test some of the best-crafted skis coming out of the Alps. This is a rare experience to try a selection of touring and downhill skis, with the experts on hand to answer questions, talk gear, and lead the ski.

The morning:

8:00am. Meet the Black Crows crew at Greengates Car Park and get kitted out with touring gear. Skin up Sarah Sue at a relaxed, social pace, with time to chat with the group and the Black Crows team on the way up.
9:30am. Demo session. Swap touring setups for downhill skis and test a range of Black Crows demos, with coffee and tunes on hand. Enjoy a group ski with Fede our Black Crows rep and gear expert and pick his brain on ski design, tuning and setup

Two ways to join us on the mountain. Skin up from 8:00am for the full morning, or arrive at 9:30am for the demo and group ski. Both are equally welcome. The more of the crew on snow, the better. Members and guests welcome, join the ski touring spit boarding slack channel for all comms.
