🎄 Behind the scenes of the Chris Lynch Rolleston Christmas Parade! 🎅

The parade is proudly organised by two local organisations — Rolleston Residents Association and Rolleston + Districts Lions Club.

Planning starts early each year, looking back at the previous parade and asking, “How can we make it even better?”

When we first started, we honestly had no idea what we were doing! We had no event-management experience and never imagined that our little parade would grow to attract 35,000+ people. 😲

We’ve learnt, grown and improved every year, and we’re incredibly proud of what the community has helped us create.

But we couldn’t do it without the amazing support of Rolleston + Districts Lions Club and Rolleston Residents Association. ❤️

It truly is a community effort — and we’re so grateful to everyone who helps make the parade possible.

Here’s to another year of bringing Rolleston together for a little Christmas magic! 🎄🎅❤️

SH1 Rolleston Access Improvements - Works Notice

WHAT: We’ll be installing a one way traffic management system
WHERE: Jones Road, between 820 Jones Road and Hoskyns Road
WHEN: Monday 31 August 2026 until February 2027

What are we doing?
From Monday 31 August, our work will include upgrading and relocating underground services, installing new stormwater drainage, building new kerb and channel, and widening and upgrading the road. We’ll also improve berms, footpaths and street lighting, and install new signage.

We’ll also build a new signalised intersection ready to connect to the future bridge linking Rolleston Drive and Jones Road. Completing these works over summer will allow traffic to use the new bridge towards the end of next year, enabling the connection across the rail line and SH1 corridor.

Traffic and pedestrian impacts
The one way traffic management system will be in place until February 2027. Please use the signposted detour routes via Izone Drive and Link Drive. Please see over the page for a map showing the traffic management layout.

Our friendly staff on site can assist with any queries. We’ll maintain pedestrian access around the work site. A temporary 30kph speed limit will be in place where we’re working so we can keep our workers and everyone safe. Please look out for changes in traffic management and follow signs on site.

Driveway access
Access to properties and businesses will be maintained within the one-way system. However, we may need to work in front of driveways from time to time. We’ll try to give you plenty notice of this. However, if you need to get into or out of your property or business and we’re in the way, please just talk to one of our friendly staff and we’ll make sure you can use your driveway.

From Monday 10 August, Metro takes over the full Rolleston–City Direct service (Routes 84 & 85).

Some context, because I've seen a few questions about it. The trial of this route started in September 2025 as a public-private partnership with Bentley Coachlines, a private operator running most of the trips commercially, on its own fares, with no ratepayer subsidy. Diesel prices went the way they did, and Bentley told us in May they couldn't keep it viable. Fair enough. They gave us time for an orderly handover rather than pulling the pin overnight, and I'm grateful for that.

The service is too well used to let it lapse. Patronage was up around 38.5% in March alone, more than 3,300 extra trips.

The funding was already there. $405,000 was set aside through a targeted rate in the 2025/26 Annual Plan to expand these services, that's what covers the transition. Council then agreed $810,000 in the 2026/27 Annual Plan (deliberations 26 May, adopted 24 June) to continue delivering transport options in Rolleston for another 12 months, this immediate need is taking this.

What changes for passengers from 10 August:

- Metro fares $3 or less with Metrocard or contactless via Motu Move, on every trip
- Later evening trips, based on customer feedback, including for shift workers
- Free transfers within two hours, bike racks, pets on board
- Boarding inside the Bus Interchange, plus audio announcements
- Hail and ride stays
- Two trips come out of the timetable, matched to actual demand

The trial runs to June 2027. What happens after that is a Long-Term Plan decision, and Selwyn residents will get their say through that process.

Thanks to the public transport team for keeping this moving, and to the Bentley crew for getting it off the ground in the first place.

What’s next, Selwyn? - final survey analysis summary

The final What’s next, Selwyn? survey analysis has now been completed.
The final survey result provides a clear community mandate to progress a Selwyn Unitary Authority as the preferred community-supported option for the Head Start proposal. The final headline results were:

Selwyn Unitary Authority 2,342, 58.0%
Mid Canterbury Unitary Authority 967, 24.0%
Northern four-council unitary authority 726, 18.0%
Total 4,035 = 100.0%

The Selwyn option therefore received more than twice the support of the Mid Canterbury option and more than three times the support of the Northern four-council option. It also retained clear majority support across the principal geographic groupings analysed.

The free-text analysis shows that respondents were applying different perspectives of what a good reform outcome would look like to them.

Selwyn-option respondents generally emphasised local control, demonstrated local capability, growth management, local voice, Selwyn identity and protection from financial or metropolitan risk.

Mid Canterbury-option respondents generally emphasised rural alignment, community of interest, geographic fit and sufficient scale without metropolitan domination.

Northern-option respondents generally emphasised scale, reduced duplication, Greater Christchurch integration, infrastructure coordination and regional or catchment capability.

The practical implication is that the proposal can fairly say that the community preference is for Selwyn to remain substantially intact and become a unitary authority.

The result does not show one part of Selwyn carrying the Selwyn option against the preferences of another part of the district. Support for the Selwyn option is broadly consistent across the district.

There are still geographic nuances. The Northern option is relatively stronger in the Greater Christchurch-facing area, which is unsurprising given the stronger connection with Christchurch for work, transport, housing and services. Mid Canterbury is relatively stronger in the north-west and south-east groups. Even so, Selwyn remains the majority preference in all three groups.

The Selwyn Unitary Authority option is the best-supported structure for Selwyn because it best balances the community’s preference for local accountability and Selwyn identity with the need for effective regional functions, catchment management, growth planning, infrastructure coordination and service continuity.

(Caveats-
The survey is self-selected and should not be described as a statistically representative poll of the Selwyn population. Percentages from free-text coding are percentages of coded comments, not percentages of all respondents. Themes can overlap, so theme percentages do not add to 100%.
The analysis is still very useful because it combines structured preference data with a large body of coded free-text evidence. The structured results show the community’s stated preference. The free-text results explain why respondents chose as they did and identify the tests and safeguards the proposal needs to address.)
