🔥 𝐇𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫. 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫. 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫. 𝐈𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲? ☀️

Long-range forecasts indicate New Zealand is likely to experience El Niño weather conditions this summer. In Canterbury, that often means hotter, drier and windier weather—the perfect recipe for wildfires.

These conditions mean 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐫, 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥. A burn pile that would normally stay contained or a spark from machinery can quickly become a fast-moving vegetation fire.

The good news is there's plenty you can do now to reduce the risk.

✅ Mow or graze long grass around your home and sheds.
✅Remove dead vegetation, leaves and other flammable materials.
✅ Trim trees and shrubs so they're not touching buildings.
✅ Keep driveways and accessways clear for emergency vehicles.
✅ Think about how you would protect your family, pets and property if a wildfire threatened your area.

Some of our firefighters this weekend headed up to Auckland to take on the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge Fundraiser,

Managing to raise over $10,000 over the last few months to contribute to the total of over $2.5 Million to Blood Cancer NZ

Once again our team found success with Gemma bringing home a gold medal and Isaac with a bronze, Fliss bringing in a 5th place and Ben in 21st. Each in their respective category.

This was our second year at this wonderful event and are looking forward to next year already!!

Thanks to all the event organisers for another great climb!

And shout out to Everest Personal Training for all the background work getting us prepared for the challenge!

What an absolute privilege it was to host the 2026 Canterbury Wajax Competition

We had an amazing day putting our skills to the test, and catching up with our good friends from multiple brigades!

We managed to find great success in our ladies and masters teams taking out top spots and bringing the trophy’s back home!

However our open… we’ll be back next year 😉 Hurunui Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade

Thanks to everyone that came along to support us and those that competed

We are greatly looking forward to doing it all again next year, for more great times!!

We have the privilege of hosting the 2026 Canterbury Wajax Challenge, this Saturday in Rolleston

⏰ 9AM-2PM, Saturday 16th May

☕️ Coffee cart and Sausage sizzle on site

There will be multiple fire teams competing on the day with numerous trophies up for grabs, come down and watch the action unfold!!

Our 2026 Sky Tower Climbing Team will be doing a fundraising bbq outside New World Wigram on the 17th of May as a last big team effort to raise as much as possible to go to Blood Cancer NZ, it would be great to see you there!

We have already raised around $6000 for this great cause!!
