Do you have a project that could make a positive difference for Selwyn's natural environment? The Natural Environment Fund could help bring it to life. 🌿

Over the past 10 years, Brian and Robyn Patchett have transformed 1.6 hectares of bare paddock on their Springston property into a thriving native wetland forest. With nearly 10,000 native plants established under the Te Ara Kākāriki vision, the area now provides habitat for native wildlife, supports birdlife, and helps improve water quality.

Their restoration journey has been supported by the Selwyn Natural Environment Fund, which provides assistance to landowners, community groups, individuals, and mana whenua working to protect, restore, and enhance the natural environment across our district.

Brian is grateful for the support received and encourages others with environmental aspirations to explore the funding available.

🪶 Selwyn is getting behind Bird of the Year 2026!

For the first time, Selwyn Libraries is taking part in Forest & Bird’s Bird of the Year competition – and we’re proudly backing one of our very own forest-dwelling taonga: the kākāriki karaka (orange-fronted parakeet). 💚

This tiny native parakeet has an incredible comeback story. Declared extinct twice before being rediscovered in the late 1980s, there are now around 450 kākāriki karaka left in the wild, including about 50 in the Hawdon Valley here in Selwyn.

Now, it’s our turn to help give this little taonga a voice! 🗳️

Over the next few weeks, Selwyn Libraries will be getting behind with kākāriki-themed storytimes, activities and fun facts on the Selwyn Libraries page, as well as displays at our libraries featuring native bird books and colouring activities.

A small but dedicated group of Selwyn District Council staff volunteered half a day last week to help restore native biodiversity, planting more than 630 native plants as part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to regenerating native flora across the district.

Working together, the team planted an impressive average of 50 plants each, contributing to the creation and enhancement of habitats that will support local wildlife, improve ecosystem health, and strengthen the district’s natural environment for future generations.

The planting effort is one of many initiatives helping to protect and restore Selwyn’s unique landscapes while fostering community stewardship of local green spaces. 🌱
