Throughout this weekโs coastal clean-up operations, one item repeatedly surfaced along the shores of Port Barton: cigarette butts.
Though small and often overlooked, cigarette butts contain plastic fibers that can persist in the environment for years, polluting our beaches and coastal waters as they break down into harmful microplastics.
This weekโs clean-up serves as a reminder that environmental damage is not always caused by the largest waste. More often, it is the waste we fail to notice that accumulates and leaves a lasting impact.
The Coast Sub-Station Port Barton, together with local boat operators, regularly conducts coastal clean-up activities, not only to remove waste but also to promote environmental responsibility, protect marine ecosystems, and strengthen public awareness of proper waste disposal.
Protecting our seas begins with the choices we make on shore.
