Earlier this month, Commissioner Philippe Dufresne, Chair of the Privacy Assembly and Privacy Commissioner of Canada, joined Alejandro Mayoral Baรฑos, Executive Director of Access Now, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada to present the 2026 Privacy and Human Rights Award to the Electronic Health Information Laboratory (EHIL) at the CHEO Research Institute.

Dr. Khaled El Emam, founder and Director of EHIL and Senior Scientist at the CHEO Research Institute, accepted the award on behalf of the laboratory. He and his team are internationally renowned for pioneering the development of privacy-enhancing technologies that support health data sharing for purposes such as research and public health surveillance and analysis, and responsible AI development โ€“ without compromising privacy.

The Global Privacy Assembly (GPA) invites qualified privacy and data protection professionals to apply as Volunteer Judges for the Global Privacy and Data Protection Awards 2026.

Volunteer Judges will evaluate shortlisted nominations across four award categories:
โ€ข Education and Awareness
โ€ข Innovation
โ€ข Accountability
โ€ข Dispute Resolution and Enforcement

Judges will assess submissions based on established evaluation criteria and contribute to a fair, transparent, and credible selection process. To uphold impartiality, judges will only be assigned to categories where they have no affiliation or conflict of interest, with each category evaluated by a panel of three volunteer judges.

If you have expertise in privacy, data protection, regulation, governance, academia, or related fields, we encourage you to share your knowledge and help recognize initiatives that are advancing privacy worldwide.

Philippe Dufresne, Chair of the Global Privacy Assembly and Privacy Commissioner of Canada, was pleased to meet with Jerry Sheehan, Director of the OECD Directorate for Science, Technology and Innovation today.

During the meeting, Commissioner Dufresne shared information about the work of the GPA and the OPC, including efforts to foster a digital ecosystem that encourages innovation while maintaining strong personal data protection, supporting youth privacy, and advancing data free flow with trust.

As technology advances and data crosses borders, this meeting highlights the value of international collaboration.
