It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒓. 𝑹𝒆𝒏𝒆 𝑹𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒔𝒑𝒊 on August 1, 2026.

The seaweed industry has lost a dedicated professional whose work, leadership, and passion greatly contributed to the advancement of the sector.

More than an engineer, Engr. Rene was a mentor, a guide, and a source of inspiration to many who continue to serve and uplift our seaweed farmers across the country.

At the 𝑩𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒖 𝒐𝒇 𝑭𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒔 - 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑺𝒆𝒂𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝑻𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑪𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓, his legacy is deeply felt. His commitment to innovation, program development, and capacity-building helped shape initiatives that strengthened the industry and improved the lives of countless stakeholders. His influence lives on not only in the projects he led, but in the people he empowered.

His passing is a profound loss to BFAR NSTDC and seaweed community. Yet his contributions and dedication will continue to inspire us as we move forward.

Blessing and Inauguration of the Seaweed Culture Laboratory and Signing of Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Office I successfully conducted the Blessing and Inauguration of the Seaweed Culture Laboratory and the Signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) at RMATDeC, Lucap, Alaminos City, Pangasinan.

The establishment of the Seaweed Culture Laboratory is a significant initiative under the BFAR-Enhanced Philippine Seaweed Development Program (EPSDP), which funded the facility to strengthen the country's seaweed industry through research, innovation, and technology development. The newly inaugurated Seaweed Culture Laboratory will serve as a hub for advancing seaweed production technologies, supporting sustainable aquaculture, and improving the livelihood of seaweed farmers.

The event also featured the signing of MOAs between BFAR and its partner local government units and organizations, reaffirming their shared commitment to sustainable fisheries development, coastal resource management, and the continued growth of the Philippine seaweed industry.

Together, we cultivate innovation, strengthen partnerships, and empower coastal communities for a more resilient and sustainable future.

𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐒 | The FY 2026 Midyear Project Review and Assessment of the Enhanced Philippine Seaweed Development Program (EPSDP) culminated in the formulation of key agreements and strategic directions to strengthen program implementation for the second semester of the year. The activity provided an opportunity to evaluate regional accomplishments, financial utilization, and project implementation, while identifying operational challenges, reporting concerns, and areas requiring technical and administrative interventions.

The review reinforced the Program's strategic direction of expanding quality seedling production through nursery development, promoting science-based technologies such as bioreactors, improving project sustainability, and aligning future interventions with the Philippine Seaweed Industry Roadmap. The agreements reached during the activity will serve as the basis for implementing corrective actions, refining program policies and guidelines, and ensuring the efficient and impactful delivery of EPSDP interventions nationwide.
