A delegation from UET Lahore, led by Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir (TI), Vice Chancellor, UET Lahore visited UET Peshawar and met Prof. Dr. Sadiq Khattak, Vice Chancellor UET Peshawar, here today. The visit was carried out as part of the directives of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to engage with leading public sector engineering universities across Pakistan and identify academic and research challenges being faced by the engineering sector and propose collaborative reforms to HEC.
During the visit, the delegation held detailed discussions with the university leadership and faculty members to present challenges and suggestions for substantial the improvement in engineering education. The meeting focused on curriculum modernization and benchmarking the engineering degree programs with international universities, strengthening academia-industry linkages, integration of artificial intelligence and soft skills as part of faculty development programs, promotion of entrepreneurship among students, and creation of funding opportunities for researchers, particularly seed funding for patent-oriented projects initiated by the universities.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Sadiq Khattak emphasized the urgent need for seed funding to support innovation, patent development and knowledge creation in engineering universities. He stated under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government’s Good Governance Roadmap, UET Peshawar had convened a comprehensive exercise to identify universities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and cluster them according to their patenting potential. He added that the initiative was aimed at developing a coordinated research and innovation ecosystem in the province by connecting institutions with similar strengths and research capacities, enabling them to work collaboratively on applied research, commercialization, and technology-driven solutions.
Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Sadiq Khattak, and Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of senior management and faculty members. Through this MoU both universities will work jointly to promote joint research initiatives, academic exchanges, and training programs, as well as the joint organization of conferences, seminars, workshops, and research projects to foster innovation and address contemporary technological challenges through indigenous solutions.
Later, the delegation visited the Gems and jewelry Center of Excellence, State-of-the-Art Lab (Chemical Engineering Department) and Earthquake Engineering Center. Prof. Dr. Sadiq Khattak also presented souvenirs to Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir, VC UET Lahore and his team.
