The mural at Strada Prometeu 26, Aviatiei, is based on two folk stories, one Irish and one Romanian. From Ireland the story of Tír na nÓg is featured along with the remarkably similar Romanian tale Youth Without Aging and Life Without Death - Tinerețe fără bătrânețe și viață fără de moarte.

This piece shows the Irish story heroine Niamh standing in front of the Romanian Prince's castle window with the sun setting over Tí na nÓg in the background. In Niamh's hands stand the heroes of both tales. We see Oisín with the rock that would ultimately bring about his end and in Niamh's second hand the Handsome Romanian Prince with his winged horse and spear.

Both heroes achieve immortality temporarily but ultimately are overcome with longing for their homeland. Despite warnings from their fae families they are desperate to see what has become of their homes so they return and perish in the process.

A huge thank you to Friz for the completion of her phenomenal mural! Watching the blank wall transform into a vibrant story was incredible.

The mural was commissioned to celebrate the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, as well as the strong and lasting bilaterial relationship between Romania and Ireland.

There are a number of Romanian, Irish, and EU symbols throughout can anyone spot some?

Over the next few weeks the EM account will be highlighting aspects of piece that celebrate our shared values and history.

We are so excited to have the phenomenally talented Friz in Bucharest this week.

Friz is putting pen to paper, or spray to wall, on a mural commissioned to celebrate the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the longstanding bilateral relationship between Romania and Ireland.

The folk-centric piece highlights shared themes, motifs, and symbols that exist throughout Irish and Romanian folklore. There are also emblems and images that celebrate our shared European journey within the mural.

This project is only possible because of the assistance of our partners at Primăria Sectorului 1.
