“A human-centric city is about putting people, their everyday experiences, needs, and aspirations, at the heart of how cities are planned and governed.”

The evolving role of urban planners is central to this concept. As cities become more complex, planners are moving beyond designing physical spaces to listening to the people who live in them. Through human-centric planning, community engagement and co-creation, cities can better respond to residents' needs while creating more inclusive, resilient and liveable urban environments.

Centre for Liveable Cities’ new evidence-based Regenerative City Framework urges cities to go beyond sustainability practices – to do more good rather than just less bad. The “Beyond Sustainability: Building a Regenerative Future for Our Cities” publication introduces this Framework and delves into detail on the regenerative city approach.

As cities face the growing realities of climate change and resource constraints, this publication explores how regenerative urban development can move beyond minimising environmental impact towards actively restoring ecosystems while strengthening liveability and resilience. Drawing on CLC’s research, engagements with over 100 experts, and case studies from Singapore and cities around the world, it distils practical strategies, key enablers and assessment indicators to support cities in putting regenerative urban development into action.

At the conclusion of the Mayors Forum of the World Cities Summit, Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC), Singapore, and Ciudad de México (CDMX) signed a Joint Declaration for Mexico City to host Mayors Forum 2027.

As the 2024 Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize Laureate, Mexico City demonstrated how bold leadership and innovative urban policies can deliver transformational progress in just five years. Through significant advances in urban regeneration, environmental sustainability, transport, and digital transformation, the city has built stronger, more resilient communities and improved the quality of life for its residents.

The Mayors Forum brings together mayors and city leaders from around the world to exchange ideas, tackle shared urban challenges, and advance solutions for more liveable and sustainable cities. As we look ahead to continuing these conversations in Mexico City, revisit the key priorities and collective commitments from Mayors Forum 2026 in the Priorities for Action.

The latest in Centre for Liveable Cities' Urban Systems Studies series, “Mandai: Balancing Development and Nature”, explores the journey of how leisure, education and tourism objectives were pursued alongside environmental concerns.

The development of Mandai Wildlife Reserve is an example of Singapore’s broader challenge of balancing the use of its limited land resources with the need to protect its nature reserves. This study examines how inter-agency planning, public engagement with stakeholders such as nature groups, and the efforts of the private sector helped to mitigate impacts on the nearby Central Catchment Nature Reserve. It also underscores the importance of collaborative, science-based approaches in achieving development goals while protecting natural ecosystems.

The WCS 2026 Science of Cities Symposium (SoCS) Poster Exhibition presented 79 posters from over 40 institutions worldwide, offering delegates and trade visitors a closer look at cutting-edge research on the most pressing urban challenges of our time.

Beyond the posters themselves, delegates had the opportunity to engage directly with researchers to gain deeper insights into their methodologies and findings across two broad SoCS themes: "AI-Powered Urban Analytics" and "Human-Centred Smart Cities". Topics included urban AI, data analytics and modelling, climate adaptation and environmental resilience, inclusivity and accessibility, community-centric methods, smart city governance and infrastructure, and health and well-being in the built environment.
