Exploring Green Careers at the National Career Expo!🎓🌍

The Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA) participated in National Career Expo, where school-going learners had the opportunity to discover how environmental knowledge can translate into meaningful careers and opportunities.

From learning about the work of the EEA, to understanding the role of the Eswatini Environment Fund and the different environmental projects young people can pursue, learners got a glimpse into the many possibilities within the green economy.

The experience went beyond conversations! Learners also witnessed environmental science in action through demonstrations of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) products. With GIS being introduced at high school level, these are valuable skills that can open doors to careers in environmental planning, conservation, climate action, natural resource management and beyond. 🗺️🌱

As Eswatini transitions towards a greener and more sustainable economy,
building green skills and nurturing the next generation of environmental professionals is more important than ever.

The Eswatini Environment Authority is participating in a three-day capacity-building training on Social and Environmental Standards (SES), Social and Environmental Risk Management (SRM), Stakeholder Response Mechanisms, and Gender Mainstreaming, convened by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Eswatini.

The workshop is equipping participants with practical knowledge and tools to identify, assess and manage environmental and social risks, strengthen stakeholder engagement and grievance mechanisms, integrate gender-responsive approaches and promote inclusive, sustainable project implementation.

As the national institution mandated to oversee Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), environmental compliance and the implementation of several UNDP-supported environmental projects, this training is directly relevant to the Authority’s work. It strengthens our capacity to ensure that development initiatives not only protect the environment but also uphold social safeguards, respect community rights and align with national and international best practices.

By strengthening our institutional capacity, we continue to advance our commitment to environmentally sound, socially inclusive and sustainable development for the people of Eswatini.

POPs Inventory & National Implementation Plan Inception Meeting
📅 23 July 2026 | 📍 George Hotel, Eswatini

The Eswatini Environment Authority successfully hosted the POPs Inventory and National Implementation Plan Inception Meeting, bringing together stakeholders to strengthen the country’s efforts in managing Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Unintentional Persistent Organic Pollutants (UPOPs).

During the presentation, participants learned where POPs can be found in our everyday lives. These harmful chemicals may be present in:
• Certain pesticides and agricultural chemicals
• Electrical equipment containing old transformer or capacitor oils (PCBs)
• Industrial chemicals and manufactured products
• Some paints, sealants, and older building materials
• Waste disposal and open burning of plastics and household waste, which can produce UPOPs such as dioxins and furans

The National Implementation Plan (NIP) was also presented, outlining the process of conducting a national inventory and data collection exercise to identify where POPs are commonly found across Eswatini. This information will help guide national actions to protect human health and the environment.

🔍 How can you identify potential POPs & UPOPs?
✔️ Old or obsolete pesticides stored on farms or in warehouses
✔️ Aging electrical transformers or capacitors that may contain PCB oils
✔️ Unlabelled or deteriorating chemical containers
✔️ Industrial processes involving combustion or waste incineration
✔️ Frequent open burning of waste, especially plastics and mixed refuse

A public notice is hereby published in terms of Section 52 of the Environment Management Act, 2002. HIS Investment (PTY) LTD has prepared an Environmental Audit and Comprehensive Mitigation Plan (CMP) for the development and operation of Matsapha Lifestyle Centre.

The purpose of the Environmental Audit is to assess the environmental and socio-economic perfomance of the Matsapha Lifestyle Centre, determine compliance with applicable environmental requirements, identify environmental impacts arising from its activities, and propose measures to prevent, minimise or address negative impacts while enhancing positive outcomes.

The Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA), through the National Ozone Unit, conducted a two-day training workshop for newly recruited customs officers at Bethel Court Hotel from 24–25 July 2026.

The workshop forms part of Eswatini’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Montreal Protocol and enhance the country’s capacity to monitor and control the import and export of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

The training equipped customs officers with the knowledge and practical skills required to identify controlled refrigerants, verify permits, apply the licensing and quota system, use the correct HS codes, and accurately capture trade data in the ASYCUDA system. Participants also received guidance on inspection procedures, detecting potential illegal trade, and working closely with the National Ozone Unit.

As frontline officers at the country’s borders, customs officials play a critical role in preventing illegal trade in controlled substances, ensuring compliance with national legislation, and supporting Eswatini’s international obligations under the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment.

The workshop demonstrates the Government of Eswatini’s continued commitment to protecting the ozone layer, addressing climate change, and strengthening national capacity for effective environmental compliance and enforcement.
