China hits back at US with countermeasures

🇨🇳สาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนดำเนินมาตรการตอบโต้ (hits back) ด้านการค้าต่อทางการสหรัฐฯ

China announced on Wednesday a package of countermeasures, including tighter export controls on drones and key components, a national security review into imported printers and copiers, and placing six US entities on its countermeasure list, against a series of US restrictions targeting Chinese companies.

A Ministry of Commerce spokesperson said in a statement that the moves were a necessary response to Washington's continued expansion of restrictions under the pretext of national security, urging the US to immediately withdraw the relevant measures, stop its wrongful actions and return to the right track of resolving differences through friendly consultation and cooperation.

The spokesperson said that the Federal Communications Commission, the US telecommunications regulator, has repeatedly introduced restrictive measures targeting Chinese companies while overstretching the concept of national security, despite China's strong opposition and calls from business communities in both countries for cooperation.

The commerce official said the measures taken by China were "overall restrained" and reflected its desire to preserve the hard-won stability of China-US economic and trade relations.

The spokesperson warned that China would take further countermeasures if the US insists on introducing new restrictive measures against China.

On the same day, the National Certification and Accreditation Administration said it would suspend, with immediate effect, post-certification factory inspections carried out by US certification agencies on behalf of designated China Compulsory Certification bodies.

UK credit unions grew assets by 2% in 2025, says Bank of England

The Bank of England has published its annual credit union statistics covering 2025, which finds that total assets held by UK credit unions rose by nearly £100,000 to £4.99bn in 2025, up 2% from the previous year.

Blacktip reef sharks off Sanya show coral revival

Blacktip reef sharks have once again returned to the shallow waters off Wuzhizhou Island in Sanya, Hainan province, a seasonal appearance that marine scientists say reflects the steady recovery of one of China's restored coral reef ecosystems.

Measuring about 1.2 to 1.4 meters in length, the sharks have become familiar summer visitors, with their annual return offering scientists encouraging evidence that the surrounding reef is regaining its ecological health.

Healthy coral reefs provide food and shelter for the sharks while supporting the complex food web on which they depend. As predators near the top of the local marine food chain, blacktip reef sharks thrive only where fish populations are abundant and water quality remains high, Zhou said.

Known scientifically as Carcharhinus melanopterus, the blacktip reef shark is listed as "near threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature because of global pressures from coral reef degradation and overfishing.

The recovery began in 2010, when Wuzhizhou Island partnered with Hainan University to establish an experimental marine ranch. Since 2016, researchers and dive teams have transplanted cultivated coral colonies and deployed artificial reefs, including concrete structures, scuttled boats and volcanic rock platforms, to restore underwater habitats.

The restoration has produced measurable results. More than 68,000 coral colonies have been transplanted across 61,000 square meters of seabed, while live coral cover has rebounded to 37.08 percent, according to the Wuzhizhou Island Tourist Area. Fish diversity has increased to 265 species, and water quality has consistently met China's highest national marine standard.

Wang Ai min, a 65-year-old retired marine professor at Hainan University, said the recovery has also been supported by the expansion of marine ranching projects and China's annual summer fishing moratorium, which reduces disturbances from fishing vessels during the sharks' seasonal visits.

The healthier ecosystem is attracting more than just blacktip reef sharks. In recent years, wild dolphins, endangered hawksbill turtles, spotted seals, whale sharks and giant groupers have all been recorded in the island's waters.

Earlier this year, an underwater photographer also captured a leaf sheep sea slug, a tiny, 1-centimeter-long marine creature so sensitive to pollution that biologists regard it as another indicator of reef health. Together with the annual return of the blacktip reef sharks, its appearance provides further evidence that Wuzhizhou Island's underwater ecosystem continues to recover.

Europe's agricultural co-ops face a crisis of fertiliser scarcity and soaring costs triggered by the war in Iran. Copa Cogeca, representing 22,000 farmers' co-operatives employing 660,000 people across Europe, is sounding the alarm.

Cogeca president Lennart Nilsson says this may be the toughest crisis the farming sector has ever faced. Unlike during the Ukrainian crisis, grain prices have not risen to offset fertiliser costs, forcing farmers to reduce farming intensity or set aside land — hitting co-operative productivity at a time when the arable sector has already endured three difficult years.

The European Commission proposed a €400m fertiliser and food security plan, but Cogeca responded with disappointment, saying it fails to alter existing EU regulations. Cogeca has called for suspension of Most-Favoured Nation tariffs on fertilisers, derogation from Nitrates Directive thresholds, and suspension of the CBAM levy — calculated to cost farmers €39bn over seven years.

UN offers grants of up to $35k to Lebanese agri co-ops

The programme aims to support sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, food processing, irrigation, storage, and value chain development

🌱โดยโครงการดังกล่าวมีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อสนับสนุนการทำการเกษตรอย่างยั่งยืน การพัฒนาการใช้พลังงานทดแทน (renewable) กระบวณการแปรรูปอาหาร (food processing) กระบวณการชลประทาน กระบวณการกักเก็บน้ำ ตลอดจนการพัฒนาห่วงโซ่เชิงคุณค่า

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is offering grants of up to US$35,000 to registered agricultural co-ops in Lebanon for “climate-smart investments that improve agricultural productivity, resilience, and market competitiveness”.

🇱🇧โครงการพัฒนาแห่งองค์การสหประชาชาติเพื่อการพัฒนาได้ดำเนินการมอบเงินอุดหนุนวงเงิน 35,000 ดอลลาร์ ให้แก่สหกรณ์การเกษตรที่ขึ้นทะเบียน (registered) อย่างสมบูรณ์ในประเทศเลบานอน ในการนี้ วงเงินดังกล่าวเป็นไปเพื่อการลงทุนที่คำนึงถึงการเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศ ซึ่งจะช่วยเพิ่มผลิตภาพทางการเกษตร เสริมสร้างความสามารถในการรับมือกับผลกระทบจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศ และยกระดับความสามารถในการแข่งขันในตลาด (market competitiveness)

Implemented under the UNDP’s Green Agri-food Transformation for Economic Recovery (Gate) Project, the programme aims to support sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, food processing, irrigation, storage, and value chain development across Lebanon.

Specific goals include modernising infrastructure, improving competitiveness, cutting production costs, boosting operational efficiency, increasing product quality, and strengthening value chains.

“The combination of grant funding and technical assistance enables co-operatives to implement practical improvements that benefit both members and local communities,” adds UNDP.

👨‍🌾โครงการพัฒนาแห่งองค์การสหประชาชาติ ได้ระบุเพิ่มเติมว่า “การผสมผสานรูปแบบความช่วยเหลือเชิงเทคนิคและเงินอุดหนุนในครั้งนี้ถือเป็นการเปิดโอกาสให้สหกรณ์ได้บังคับใช้ข้อปฏิบัติเชิงพัฒนาอันจะเป็นประโยชน์ (benefit) ต่อสมาชิกและประชากรในท้องถิ่น”

Priority focus areas include water-efficient farming with improved irrigation, conservation systems and improved water management.

💦ในการนี้ มิติที่ได้รับการยกระดับความสำคัญ (Priority) ในการพัฒนายังรวมถึงการทำการเกษตรด้วยน้ำอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพผ่านการปรับปรุงระบบชลประทาน ระบบการอนุรักษ์ (conservation systems) ทรัพยากรตลอดจนการปรับปรุงรูปแบบการบริหารจัดการน้ำ

The project also wants to address issues around climate adaptation, crop quality, sustainable production systems and renewable energy use.
