In Memoriam: Associate Professor Dr Chookiat Panaspornprasit, former director of ISIS Thailand.

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Associate Professor Dr Chookiat Panaspornprasit, a respected scholar, teacher, mentor, and former Director of the Institute of Security and International Studies (ISIS Thailand).

Dr Chookiat served as Director of ISIS Thailand from 18 July 2002 to 18 July 2006, providing steady and dedicated leadership during an important period for the Institute. Under his directorship, ISIS Thailand continued to strengthen its role as a forum connecting academic scholarship with policy debates on regional and international affairs. His leadership contributed to the Institute’s growing engagement with scholars, policymakers, and international partners.

As a faculty member of the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University, Dr. Chookiat made an important contribution to the study and teaching of international relations, particularly the international politics of the Middle East in Thailand. His scholarship helped broaden the Department’s intellectual horizons beyond Thailand and the Asia-Pacific, introducing generations of students to the complexities of Middle Eastern politics, foreign policy, and great power relations.

Equally enduring was his contribution as a teacher and mentor. Throughout his academic career, Dr Chookiat generously shared his knowledge, experience, and guidance with students. Many benefited not only from his intellectual insights but also from his encouragement and commitment to their academic development.

Dr Chookiat’s legacy lives on in the institution he helped lead, the field he helped develop, and, above all, the generations of students and colleagues whose lives he touched.

He will be deeply missed and warmly remembered.

The Institute of Security and International Studies (ISIS Thailand), the Nelson Mandela Center for Conflict Resolution, Prevention of Violence and Human Security, and the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University, in collaboration with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF Thailand), organized an academic forum titled "Reassessing Thai Foreign Policy" on Thursday, 3 September 2026, at the Chumbhot-Pantip Conference Room, 4th Floor, Prajadhipok-Rambhaibarni Building, Chulalongkorn University.

The event commenced with opening remarks and a tribute to Assoc. Prof. Kullada Kesboonchoo-Mead, delivered by Assoc. Prof. Prakorn Siriprakob, Dean of the Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University. This was followed by a keynote address titled "Thailand’s Foreign Policy Direction: At a Crossroads or at a Dead End?" delivered by Emeritus Prof. Surachart Bamrungsuk. The forum featured faculty members from the Department of International Relations across two panel sessions:

Session 1: Thailand’s Strategic Choices between Great Powers: Bamboo Still Bending or Already Broken?

Panelists: Assoc. Prof. Natthanan Kunnamas, Asst. Prof. Pongphisoot Busbarat, and Asst. Prof. Teewin Suputtikun and and moderated by Asst. Prof. Kalaya Chareonying

Session 2: Thailand’s Regional Policy: The Leader or the Laggard in ASEAN?

On August 26, 2026, from 09:30 to 11:30 AM, the Institute of Security and International Studies (ISIS Thailand), in collaboration with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), hosted the book launch and academic panel discussion on "Book Launch & Public Forum - Law of the Jungle in the WOLF WORLD: Geopolitics and The Future of Southeast Asia."

The event featured Mr. Marc Saxer, author of Geopolitical Conflict in the Wolf World: Great Power Competition and the Illiberal Revolt against the Liberal Order and FES Asia Director, as the presenter. Joining as discussants were Ambassador Robert F. Godec, Former US Ambassador to Thailand, and Dr. Pongphisoot Busbarat, Director of ISIS Thailand. The session was moderated by Dr. Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Professor & Senior Fellow at ISIS Thailand.
