UWA has welcomed newly hatched triplets of Grey Crowned Chicks at Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre - Entebbe Zoo

The triplet chicks, which hatched between 27th - 28th. May 2026 are reported to be in good health, as confirmed by the animal caretakers and veterinary doctors.

This marks the fourth successful ex-situ breeding of Grey Crowned Cranes at Entebbe Zoo, a success attributed to the professional animal welfare provided by UWA experts, the favorable semi-wild environment in which the animals are kept at this Centre, and several other contributing factors.

The IUCN Red List classifies the Grey Crowned Cranes as an endangered species, with an estimated population of approximately 12,000 to 14,000 birds in Uganda.

The population of this National bird is significantly impacted by habitat loss due to wetland degradation, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal trafficking.

UWA has commenced the process of taking custody of wildlife contraband that was confiscated at Entebbe International Airport between 2012 and 2018.

The contraband includes 6,017 kilograms of ivory, both raw and worked pieces, approximately two tonnes of pangolin scales weighing 2,030 kilograms, 114 kilograms of rhino horns, 8.8 kilograms of hippopotamus teeth, and other assorted wildlife products including skins and lion teeth.

The illegal wildlife products were confiscated through joint operations conducted by UWA and security agencies at Entebbe International Airport between 2012 and 2018. Since then, the exhibits have been stored at Aviation Police Entebbe.

Aviation Police Entebbe resolved to hand over the exhibits to UWA due to limited storage space at the station.

UWA officially closed the "Save the Parrot Project" under the JICA project on 26th May 2026, that has been in operation since 2021 at the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre

At the Kasugai Cultural Centre in Japan, UWA, represented by the Commissioner of Community Conservation and Ex-situ Wildlife Services, David Musingo, expressed gratitude to JICA and Chubu University for their collaboration with UWEC, which was later merged with UWA. This initiative has positioned Uganda as a model country for parrot conservation.

The symposium was attended by representatives from JICA, Chubu University, and Toyama Municipal Family Park, along with researchers, students, local leaders, and others in Japan.

The ''Save The Parrot project'' is designed to raise community awareness, promote anti-poaching initiatives, and implement reforestation efforts in areas that are crucial habitats for the endangered African Grey Parrot, all to establish a sustainable model where both humans and parrots can flourish.

UWA Inaugurates New Honorary Wildlife Officers to Strengthen Conservation in Uganda.

UWA has today marked a significant milestone during the Inauguration and Annual General Meeting of the Honorary Wildlife Officers, bringing together leaders, conservationists, and stakeholders committed to strengthening wildlife protection and environmental stewardship in Uganda.

Speaking at the event, UWA Board Chair - Prof. James Kalema stated that today marks the beginning of an important journey for the newly appointed Honorary Wildlife Officers. He urged them to remain committed to promoting harmonious coexistence between wildlife and communities, while working closely with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to address the ongoing challenges of human-wildlife conflict.

He further emphasized that conservation efforts are most effective when strengthened through partnerships, collaboration, and active community engagement.

The Executive Director, Dr. James Musinguzi, noted that the Honorary Wildlife Officers were selected in recognition of their hard work, dedication, commitment, and passion for protecting Uganda’s wildlife and natural heritage.

He emphasized that their service reflects a shared responsibility to conserve biodiversity, promote environmental stewardship, and safeguard wildlife for future generations. He added that the inauguration is not only a recognition of outstanding contribution, but also a renewed call to strengthen conservation efforts across the country.

Representing the Minister of Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities-Uganda, Dr. Bashir Ajer described the occasion as a great step forward in strengthening ceremonial conservation programmes and advancing Uganda’s commitment to protecting its natural heritage. He congratulated the newly appointed officers and encouraged them to leverage their networks and influence to promote conservation initiatives.

He further highlighted that the honorary framework continues to play an important role in research and development, sustainable management of natural heritage, and supporting national conservation efforts through innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

UWA Board of Trustees has officially appointed the new Honorary Wildlife Officers and has opened the Annual General Meeting 26/27, reaffirming government commitment to protecting Uganda’s natural resources and promoting sustainable conservation practices.

UWA conducted a training yesterday 18th May 2026, for senior staff and Rangers in two Conservation Areas — QECA and MFCA, each began training of 200 EarthRanger users, on the use of the tool for collecting and managing field data including problem animals, patrols, tourism activities, and others.

EarthRanger is UWA’s primary data collection, visualisation and management tool. This is a major step toward improving real-time wildlife monitoring, enhancing patrol coordination, and supporting data-driven protection of Uganda’s national parks.

With better use of technology, wildlife conservation becomes more effective, faster, and more connected than ever before.

Uganda Wildlife Authority represented by Ag. commissioner for Tourism and Business Development Dorcus Rukundo, has participated in the International Museum Day 2026 celebrations today in Jinja City, where leaders, diplomats, and cultural stakeholders highlighted the importance of museums in preserving Uganda’s heritage and promoting tourism.

During the event, the Mayor of Jinja requested the Minister of Tourism to consider establishing a Centre of Museums in the city, saying museums are centres of wisdom that preserve storytelling, creativity, and the ways of Uganda’s ancestors.

The celebrations focused on positioning Jinja, home to the Source of the Nile, as an international tourism destination through culture and heritage preservation.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Doreen Katusiime, said Busoga was chosen because of its rich cultural and historical heritage, noting that government investments in tourism infrastructure reflect efforts to decentralize national investment and diversify Uganda’s tourism products.

Minister Col (Rtd).Tom R.Butime applauded the Kyabazinga and Busoga Kingdom leadership for supporting tourism activities and praised schools and teachers for creatively promoting Uganda’s heritage.

He emphasized the need for libraries, museums, maps, and other visitor facilities that encourage tourists and students to stay longer, learn more, and appreciate Uganda’s culture.

“A country that does not respect history has no memory or identity. Museums must become centres of heritage, diversity, and inclusion,” Butime said.

Uganda’s Ambassador to Arusha, Ann Katusiime, said museums are more than buildings that store artifacts, describing them as institutions that connect people to culture and identity.

The Belgium Ambassador to Uganda praised Uganda’s cultural beauty and encouraged museums to become more interactive for children through literature, music, and artifacts, especially during a period when the country is showcasing its tourism potential through events like POATE 2026.

UWA One Health Camp at Mayor’s Gardens, Entebbe has been completed successfully and we extend our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who participated and supported this important initiative.

Through the collective efforts of the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Twiga Veterinary Clinic (TVC), Entebbe Municipal Council, our veterinary teams, volunteers, and community members, we successfully reached a total of 547 animals:

🐱 17 Cats
🐶 530 Dogs

We also carried out:
✔️ 19 Spays
✔️ 22 Castrations

The camp provided free rabies vaccination, animal treatment services, and community sensitisation on zoonotic diseases, responsible pet ownership, and human-wildlife coexistence under the One Health approach.

Thank you to every pet owner and partner who contributed to making the day impactful and successful. Together, we continue building healthier animals, healthier people, and a healthier environment.
