You might have seen the billowing black smoke throughout Abilene this afternoon. At approximately 2:30PM Potosi Volunteer Fire Department was toned out for an unknown fire. Upon arrival, it was observed to be an unauthorized burn of illegal items including tires, furniture, mattresses, oil cans, & brush. Although Taylor County is not currently in a burn ban, there is a list of prohibited items that you cannot burn. Please be extremely mindful when attempting to burn any piles in or around your property. Failing to adhere to the law can and often results in fines from the TCEQ as well as the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office.

We remained on scene for approximately two hours so we could allow the amount of items to burn to a manageable load. With tires especially, the amount of water it requires to extinguish it can be astronomical. Thankfully with the amount of rain we have received so far this year, the fire was able to be contained and posed no further threat to any other surrounding homes or property. If you are planning on having a controlled burn, please notify the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office at (325)674-1301 and give us a head’s up at (325)692-2662.

BIG shout out to Abilene Wrecker Service for coming to the rescue today!

Even our mighty 5 ton brush truck needed a little “tow-tactical assistance” (we’re calling it training, yeah…training 😂). When horsepower meets “oops,” Justin was there quick, fast, & in a hurry to get it back to our station.

We handle fires…they handle everything else.
🔥➡️🚚 Thanks again for the save!

Reflecting on 2025, we acknowledge the Community Foundation of Abilene's significant contribution to our organization through an $8,500 grant, which allowed us to buy two portable radios. This support is pivotal in our endeavor to modernize our communication equipment. We appreciate the foundation's commitment, and while we continue to work towards fully updating our systems, this grant has helped our project keep momentum. Thank you. The Grinch is coming to Potosi! Come out and help us parade through Potosi Prairie & Pack Saddle while we give him a reason for his heart to grow. Anyone is welcome to participate but in order to caravan down 1750, you must be in a DOT approved vehicle. Those vehicles will meet at the station at 4:00pm on December 14th to get lined up. Golf carts, side by sides, and trailers will need to line up at the entrances of Potosi Prairie, Pack Saddle Creek, &/or Pack Saddle Prairie as we spread some holiday cheer. Bring the kids down to Quicksilver at the conclusion of the parade for pictures, loot, and a hot chocolate bar.

If interested in participating, please submit a text with your name & contact information, type of vehicle/float, & if you plan to meet at the station or one of the subdivisions to the number on the flyer.

The Taylor County Commissioner's Court has issued a ban on outdoor burning effective immediately. You can be charged with violating this order if you start any fires (intentional or unintentional.) The penalty for violation of this ban is a $500 fine. You can also be held responsible for any damages caused by any fires you start. There is a large amount of grassy fuel due to the rain we have received this year. This fuel is becoming dryer every day with increasing temperatures and winds. Even the smallest spark can start a wildfire. Be extremely cautious with any outdoor activities that have the potential to create sparks or heat. Be sure you extinguish smoking materials properly and ensure your safety chains aren't dragging if towing a trailer. All of these actions can start a wildfire. You can be held liable for any fires you start.
