Fire education is always important!

Today we held a small class for 4 future firefighters, πŸ‘©πŸ½β€πŸš’ Eva, πŸ‘©πŸ½β€πŸš’ Rebecca, πŸ‘©πŸ½β€πŸš’ Kierra, and πŸ‘©πŸ½β€πŸš’ Myra. (At least we are trying convince them!).

We learned about fire safety in our homes 🏑, the different types of trucks πŸš’, tried on some heavy gear πŸ”₯, and even played with Chief, the Fire Dog! 🐾

Learning is never boring here! Always accepting new volunteers!

🚨 TORNADO WATCH IN EFFECT – GARRETT COUNTY πŸŒͺ️

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for Garrett County until 8PM this evening. Conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.

A watch means tornadoes are possible. Now is the time to prepare and stay alert.

βœ… What You Should Do Now:

Monitor reliable weather sources and enable weather alerts on your phone

Identify your safe place β€” a basement or small interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows

Have shoes, a flashlight, and a way to receive warnings nearby

Secure outdoor items that could become airborne in strong winds

Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued

⚠️ If a Tornado Warning is issued or a tornado is spotted:

Take shelter immediately

Move to the lowest level of your home or building

Protect your head and neck

Do NOT try to outrun a tornado in a vehicle

Garrett County Emergency Management will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates as needed.

Stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

The Stop the Bleed initiative is a national campaign designed to empower individuals to recognize and control severe bleeding in emergency situations.

Last night, our community received Stop the Bleed training from the University of Maryland Medical System. There were 34 participants who learned critical life saving skills! Each participant received a free Stop the Bleed kit. Light refreshments were provided by our very own auxiliary.

We had a GREAT morning with the students of Garrett Christian Academy!

We learned what it meant to volunteer and serve our community. Fun fact: all of Garrett County's fire departments are VOLUNTEER. πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸš’

We learned firefighters don't just fight fires, although that's cool, we respond to car accidents, trees down, helicopter landings, brush fires, alarms, ambulance assists, and many other things. πŸš‘

We learned all the crazy sounds πŸ”” a breathing apparatus makes. And how quickly firefighters have to move through a house while they control their breathing. 🫁

We even practiced getting low, because smoke goes up ⬆️ - we go down! ⬇️

We talked about the importance of not hiding 🫣 from firefighters πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸš’! We tested the kids to see how loud they could be so firefighters could find them in the dark, smoke-filled room.

They even got to see our cool tools πŸͺ“ 🧯, including our thermal imaging camera πŸ“Έ and the inside of the fire truck πŸš’. AND they met Chief the Fire Dog!

We have a great future of firefighters in Garrett Christian Academy!

Thanks to Firefighter Shaina, Firefighter Chris, Firefighter Jess, Firefighter Kendra, and Firefighter Isaac.
