Yesterday Judge Judge Joy Malek Oldfield hosted a brown bag luncheon for court employees to celebrate . Judge Oldfield is the Presiding Judge of the Summit County Turning Point Program, the only adult felony drug court program in the area. The mission is to improve the quality of life in our community by offering substance treatment and court supervision in a combined setting. During the luncheon, attendees played a learning game with fun facts about recovery, wrote letters of encouragement to members of the Turning Point Program, and heard from retired Cuyahoga County Judge Bill McGinty about his lifetime of work in recovery. In addition to yesterday’s luncheon, Judge Oldfield spearheaded a number of events this month to highlight recovery - including the 4th annual Turning Point Resource Fair, a graduation ceremony celebrating ten graduates with long-term sobriety, and the 2nd annual kickball tournament “Clash of the Courts and Summit County Valor Court and Judge Susan Baker Ross. This year, for the first time, Judge Oldfield, Turning Point and the Summit County Turning Point Alumni Group won the tournament and took home the The JADFA House cup. It was a wonderful celebration of community, camaraderie and recovery. The Court is a place of hope and healing. On this past Saturday, HOPE Court's Presiding Judge Alison Breaux, who also serves as a NAMI Summit County Board Member, participated in the ANNUAL NAMI WALK for the 8th year.

As an avid supporter of those who suffer from serious mental health challenges, Judge Breaux and her HOPE Court team were on full display at this year's event. Judge Breaux, HOPE team members and participants walked, while others hosted a table, handed out HOPE Court swag, candy and provided information about the program.

NAMI Summit County is an important community partner to HOPE Court, providing support, education, resources and referrals, and advocacy for individuals living with mental illness and their families.

The annual NAMI Walk is a great opportunity for HOPE Court participants and treatment team members to come together with the community, raise awareness about mental illness, and show support for individuals and families affected by mental health conditions. All funds raised directly support NAMI Summit County's mission of education, advocacy, support and public awareness.

Emergencies can happen anywhere…even at the courthouse! This is why Summit County Court of Common Pleas - General Division has partnered with the Akron Fire Department to provide mandatory CPR, AED, and Stop the Bleed training.

This 4-hour training, which is being facilitated at the Akron Fire EMS Training Center, began on August 7th and is limited to 15 participants per session to provide plenty of hands-on instruction. Upon their successful completion, each participant will receive a certificate.

Judge Christine Croce introduced the idea for the training saying “We deal with the public and we should be prepared for emergencies.” That concern brought her in direct contact with Chief Henderson from Akron Fire and they concluded the training was necessary and that Akron Fire could provide it.

Director of Human Resources Kristen Colley coordinated the training for staff and recently indicated that 90% of the court’s staff have registered. She stated that those who have taken the training have reported it was a great experience.

The Court is looking forward to having a more knowledgeable staff who can respond with confidence in those critical moments before emergency responders arrive.

Pursuant to Akron Municipal Court's local court rules, the open enrollment period for attorneys wishing to apply for the Misdemeanor Criminal Appointed Counsel List is twice per year.

If you submitted an application in the past year and were approved, you do not need to reapply.

Please note this application is for appointments in the Barberton Municipal Court and the Stow Municipal Court as well.

If you wish to apply, please fill out the online application and e-mail it to [email protected] by Friday, August 28, 2026.
