For the first time in decades, the John Brown Monument is officially open for visits with no appointment needed! 🎉

Earlier today, the City of Akron joined the Akron Zoo, Summit Metro Parks, the Summit County Historical Society, and Akron Bicentennial to celebrate the new trail leading to this over 100‑year‑old landmark. Visitors can now reach the site during zoo hours, following a path that includes the original stone steps and a brick walkway believed to date back to John Brown’s time on this property.

John Brown was an abolitionist whose 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry made him a pivotal, and polarizing, figure in the fight against slavery. Akron’s German‑American Alliance built the monument in 1910 to honor his legacy, and in 1938 the Negro 25‑Year Club added benches, a fountain, and a statue recognizing Brown’s sacrifice.

The City is proud to help make this historic site accessible once again. Learn more about its history here: https://bit.ly/4ySlsec

The City of Akron would like to shoutout our Department of Neighborhood Assistance. Last week, Mayor Malik had the opportunity to meet with a majority of the department and thank them for the work they do each and every day. The Department of Neighborhood Assistance connects Akron residents with programs that make neighborhoods safer, stronger, and more vibrant. The department consists of the 311-call center, code compliance division, housing and community services division, and recreation and parks.

Though each division offers different services, all share one purpose: helping Akron's neighborhoods thrive. A 311 call may lead to a code compliance or animal control response; a deteriorated property may need rehabilitation, monitoring or demolition; a family getting housing help may also benefit from nearby parks and recreation programs. By coordinating these services, the department can respond more effectively to both individual concerns and broader neighborhood needs which is one way of strengthening the bridge between residents and government. The City of Akron is proud of this department and the direct services they provide to residents. We will continue listening to the community to build an Akron where our neighborhoods succeed.

Today, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik announced the launch of a new Small Business Enterprise (SBE) program designed to increase opportunities for small businesses to compete for and participate in City contracts and procurement. The City is launching the effort with a series of pilot projects representing a minimum estimated $1.19 million in SBE spending, along with a new SBE Spotlight program that will connect small businesses directly with City departments.

The SBE program replaces the City’s previous Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) and Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE) programs, which had limited enforcement under those established goals. Under the new program, the city will have enforcement ability to ensure that small, local businesses are being included in these public investments.

The SBE initiative is part of Mayor Malik's broader Working Together strategy, which aims to expand economic opportunity, support local businesses, and ensure more Akron residents and businesses can benefit from the investments being made across the city. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3Vqu5y2
