Thank you to Jenn Kidd and The Nightlight for allowing Summit County Turning Point Program participants and Summit County Turning Point Program Alumni Group to take a field trip next week and watch the new Union County movie. Union County stars Will Poulter and Noah Centineo as foster brothers navigating opioid addiction recovery through a court-mandated drug program in rural Ohio. Thank you to those actors and to Adam Meeks and Oscilloscope Laboratories for shining a light on the efforts we make in our court recovery programs. If you’re an alumni or participant and want to attend, reach out to your case manager, program manager or Benny Rich. And a special thank you to Ray Recovery and Thomas Caplea for generously co-sponsoring this field trip with Judge Joy.

The Akron Community Foundation Women's Endowment Fund has a long history of uplifting, empowering and educating women and girls in our county. Last night’s Circle of Empowerment event encouraged more participation and celebrated the growth of the fund to more than $6 million - an enormous accomplishment since its inception more than 30 years ago. The Fund has awarded nearly $2.7 million in grants to programs which include health and wellness, safety from violence, and economic empowerment. As a past Advisory Board member and a current COE member, I’m grateful for all the generous donors committed to the advancement of local women and girls. (Shoutout to my plus one Anna Oldfield who came along with me last night).

If you didn’t get a chance to hit the Our Lady of the Cedars Lebanese Festival at Our Lady of the Cedars of Mount Lebanon Maronite Church on Cleveland-Massillon Road, get there tonight or tomorrow. The food is delicious, the people are wonderful (I mean of course bc they’re Lebanese!) and there’s a special banner hanging above the dessert. Points if you do what my godfather Elias J. Karam did and get your pic in front of it. Endorsed by Uncle Elias! Yay! 🇱🇧

I am so thankful I was able to present at Northampton Cuyahoga Valley Rotary Club today. My darling departed dad was a member of this group and loved them so much. Thanks to my cousin and Rotary President Tony Karam for the invitation and for your interest in the Summit County Turning Point Program and the Summit County Pro Bono Collaborative. Two wonderful programs for the people we serve.

I recently had the pleasure of swearing in the new board members for the County of Summit ADM Board. Not everyone knows about all the resources we are blessed to have in our community because of ADM. From crisis support and a 24/7 walk-in detox, to an addiction helpline connecting people with local treatment providers, to recovery housing and funding for mental health and substance dependency treatment providers who offer life-saving care - these are only a sampling of all that ADM provides in our area. Thank you to ADM for your partnership with the court and the Summit County Turning Point Program. We couldn’t do all we do without you.

You may have heard about the upcoming America 250 event at the courthouse. I will not be in attendance. Please see Judge Kani Hightower’s letter as Presiding Judge of the Summit County Common Pleas Court. Summit County Local Rule 4.04 states that the Presiding Judge shall represent the Court at all public or civic functions occurring during the Presiding Judge's term of office. Judge Hightower, our only black common pleas judge, was not asked to assist in the planning or ex*****on of this public event, specifically targeted to the black community. I unknowingly participated in the promotional video because I wanted to educate the public about our court. Now, knowing how marginalized Judge Hightower was, I cannot in good conscience support or participate in this event. The courthouse is a place of hope and healing and should be inclusive to all who enter. If you are interested in learning more about the common pleas court, please reach out and we can find a time to chat.

Friday night was filled with joy (no pun intended) as I celebrated a night of theatre - Akron style! Dinner at the Diamond Grille was top tier per usual, followed by Sister Act with my “sisters” at the Akron Civic Theatre Knight Stage. All of the performers were wonderful, and especially Brian Lamoda-Genêt’s entertaining and vibrant performance as the Monsignor. What a wonderful night with a special group of ladies. If you haven’t seen a show at the Akron Civic lately - treat yourself. You won’t regret it!
