Our youth project manager, Emily Derrenbacher, visited Niagara County to deliver the keynote speech and provide training to members of the Hope Speaks Niagara Community Coalition. The coalition members participated in a valuable day of collaboration and learning about the impact su***de prevention outreach has in their community. She was alongside Nick Kester, the Senior Planner at the Niagara County Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

For Elaya, a peer specialist at the New York State Office of Mental Health, doing the work of su***de prevention is personal. Her lived experience shapes the care and dedication she brings to supporting others. In this video, she shares why talking openly about su***de matters: when people feel safe telling the truth, we can connect them with support sooner. Her words is a reminder that these conversations can help save lives. Take time to practice asking directly about su***de, listening without judgement, and helping someone find support in a time of need.

safeTALK (Su***de Alertness For Everyone) is a 3-hour, evidence-based training program that teaches community members how to recognize su***de alerts, overcome barriers to discussing su***de, and connect individuals with life-saving resources using the TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe, to ensure immediate safety and connect them to proper help. safeTALK aims to create su***de-alert communities by empowering everyday people to act as "su***de first-aid" helpers, moving beyond stigma and fear to offer support and link people to trained professionals.

Goals & Objectives:
✅ Learn to notice and respond to invitations for help.
✅Practice open, direct conversations about su***de.
✅Build confidence to connect someone with further care and support.
✅Explore how your attitudes and beliefs can affect your ability to help.
✅Work together in a safe, supportive environment with others who care about making a difference.

Intended Audience: safeTALK is designed for anyone age 15 or older, including many in more formal helping roles.

Emily Derrenbacher recently attended the 5th Annual New York State LGBTQIA+ Convening in Albany. It was a great opportunity to listen, learn, and better understand the experiences and needs of LGBTQ+ New Yorkers. These conversations are essential to building more inclusive, responsive, and connected communities where everyone can find support and feel a sense of belongings.

Su***de Prevention Month gives us a chance to get out into the community to share our su***de prevention resources. The more we can spread the word that su***de is preventable and help is available, the safer our communities can be. Garra Lloyd-Lester recently attended the Su***de Prevention Coalition of Madison County's 2026 STEPtember for Su***de Prevention, Awareness & Remembrance Walk.
This annual event brings the community together to honor those lost to su***de, support those who may be struggling and raise awareness about su***de prevention and mental health.
