At approximately 5:45 a.m., the Westmere Fire Department was dispatched to a Rescue call on Crossgates Mall Road for a report of a vehicle actively taking on water, with floodwaters reportedly reaching the windows. Shortly after initiating our response, we were informed by the Guilderland dispatch center that communication with the caller has been lost, increasing the urgency of our response.
Upon arrival, firefighters identified that there were two separate vehicles involved, one of which was fully submerged. Crews entered the floodwaters and rapidly searched both vehicles. The submerged vehicle was confirmed to be unoccupied, while the second vehicle contained one occupant.
By 6:05 a.m., firefighters had safely removed the occupant from the vehicle and the floodwaters. Fortunately, the individual was not injured.
This incident is a reminder that our number one priority is life safety. The successful outcome was made possible through quick decision making, teamwork, training, and the dedication of our members. Incidents like this reinforce the importance of continually training for the unexpected so we are prepared to protect the residents of the Westmere Fire District and the Town of Guilderland when they need us most.
Remember: Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. It takes only a small amount of moving water to carry away a vehicle, and the depth of water beneath the surface is impossible to see.
