YWCA Alaska Eliminate Racism. Empower Women. Promote Peace, Justice, Freedom and Dignity for All.

It's and that means we're highlighting another amazing Awardee! We have Angie Astle, Executive VP of Finance, CFO at Chugach Alaska.

Angie is a former board member of the YWCA Alaska, including leading the organization as chair. Having served her two terms (6 years), she moved off the board after mentoring so many others to carry on the mission of the YWCA. She embodies the mission to eliminate racism and empower women in her lifting up of fellow friends, community members, and colleagues. Her steadfast leadership helped the YWCA prepare for the COVID-19 pandemic and make the transition from in person to virtual seamless for the rest of the board.

Did you know?

Alan Turning, famed scientist in WWII who cracked "Enigma", a German Coded Communication Device, was gay? And that Alan was arrested for his homosexuality, where after conviction, he accepted the sentence of chemical castration so he could continue to work? He was found dead, suspected by su***de, in 1954. He was posthumously pardoned in 2013 and was subject of the Academy Award-winning film, The Imitation Game.

And did you know that Sara Jospehine Baker, who helped catch the infamous "Typhoid Mary", identified as 'woman-oriented-woman'? Becoming the first woman to receive a doctorate in public health, Sara trained mothers how to care for their babies and invented infant formula, enabling mothers to work.

Find out more about these two and others at the Welcome Sanger Institute Blog and celebrate the amazing leaders who are LGTBQ+!

Now it's time to throw it back to 2024! First up, we have WOA Awardee, Aleesha Towns-Bain!

Aleesha's commitment to nonprofits in Alaska is shown through her experience and commitment. This embodies the YWCA's mission in ensuring that all voices are heard, that race isn't a factor, and all women are lifted up and empowered. Her direct experience with Bristol Bay Shareholders and their descendants has given her a front seat perspective to their challenges but also to their gifts to the community despite those challenges.

Ida B. Wells co-founded Chicago’s first black suffrage organization in the city and state, Alpha Suffrage Club. She insisted that Black women be fully included in the fight for voting rights at a time when many white-led organizations excluded them.

Her work highlighted how racism and sexism were intertwined, and she argued that true democracy required confronting both, an approach now recognized as an early form of intersectional advocacy.

Her legacy makes clear that a movement that excludes the most marginalized cannot truly call itself a movement for justice.

It's Wednesday and you know what that means! Our last, but certainly not least, Women of Achievement Awardee, Sheneé Williams is the definition of a change agent. Working at Shiloh Community Housing as CEO, Sheneé changes people's lives for the better.

In an interview with GCI Gives & Megan Webb: Sheneé Williams has always wanted to help people. She grew up in a low-income housing project in Alabama and said education and her faith is what helped her get on the path she is on today. “I knew there had to be a better way,” said Williams, President and CEO of Shiloh Community Housing. “I’ve been blessed to be able to experience a lot of things and I knew education was my key to continue to move beyond my circumstances. I just want to help other people do the same thing.” Williams leads Shiloh Community Housing Inc.’s effort to assist those who need help with housing through its programs.
