Gas tax holiday could hamper Northern Virginia transit agencies

"It sounds great, but I think there’s going to be a lot of unintended consequences from this action,” Danny Plaugher from VHSR and VTA told InsideNoVa.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin wants to offer Virginia’s drivers some relief at the pump amid rising gas prices, but that relief could mean trouble for the region’s transit agencies and riders.

In case you missed the announcment

Kudos to Hitachi Rail for their announcement of Hagerstown, MD as the new assembly plant for our future 8000-series rail cars! This investment means economic benefits to the entire region through jobs, materials, and suppliers.

These new 8000-series cars will serve as replacements to the 2000 and 3000-series rail cars that are approaching the end of their useful life. If Metro exercises our contract options, they will also serve as 6000-series replacements. This contract puts Metro on track to have a completely new, modern fleet for 2030 and beyond.
