Celebrate Deaf Awareness Month & Maine Deaf Culture Week This September!

September is Deaf Awareness Month—a time to honor Deaf culture, advocate for accessibility, and celebrate the signing community. Maine has a rich Deaf history and a vibrant calendar of events throughout the month! From the Sign Tree Camp at Pine Tree Camp to the annual Deaf Culture Festival on Mackworth Island, there are plenty of ways to get involved and learn.

Come check out our Deaf Authors & Culture book display or log into CloudLibrary to find accessible e-books and audiobooks! Interested in learning American Sign Language? We will have a 4-session American Sign Language Class on October 7th, 14th, 21st, and November 4th at 5:30pm. Registration is required, and attendees must be able to attend all 4 sessions: https://lithgowlibrary.libcal.com/event/17550631. We also have a digital resource called Transparent Language, where you can learn ASL free with your library card!

This September, Lithgow Public Library invites you to celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month and discover how a library card can hit all the right notes, no matter what your tastes are!

With a library card, you can do more than check out books. From free classes and job resources to homework help, streaming media, a library of things, and cultural events, today’s libraries connect communities to information, inspiration, and each other.

An initiative of the American Library Association, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September since 1987 to mark the beginning of the school year, combat illiteracy, and encourage communities everywhere to explore all the offerings that having a library card unlocks. Today, thousands of public libraries and schools nationwide participate in the month-long celebration each fall.

This year’s theme, “A Library Card Hits All the Right Notes,” is a reminder that libraries offer something for everyone—no matter your age, background, or goals. Whether you’re checking out a classic story or trying something new, finding harmony at the library’s programs, finding your focus in a study room or vibing out in a cozy nook, or composing your future with new skills, there’s a seat in the front row at the library for you, and your library card is the ticket.

Last week was the culmination of our 2026 Summer Reading program for kids with the Bikes for Books giveaway with the Masons at Bethlehem Lodge #35. 14 lucky kids ages 6-12 who finished their Summer Reading challenge were drawn from a hat and invited to pick out a brand new BMX bike, provided by the Masons. Thank you to the Masons whose steadfast partnership makes the end of Summer Reading a true celebration. And congratulations to our 14 bike winners! 🚲🌱☀📖

Last week we were lucky enough to have Maine author/illustrator Andres Vera Martinez visit our Tween Scene and Tween Book Group! Kids got to hear first hand about the process of creating a graphic novel, got a primer on Aztec mythology, and participated in a hands-on collaborative drawing activity led by an artist 🎨

Many thanks to Andrés for making the trip up to Augusta, and to the Friends of Lithgow Library for supporting this and so many other great programs at the library.

And for any readers looking for a great middle grade graphic novel that highlights the perils of middle school and some incredible mythology, be sure to check out Monster Locker and its sequel Nine-Tail Trouble. You might find a special note from the author in our library copy...
