I was tremendously sad to hear about the death of Searsmont Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Woodbury, who suffered serious injuries while responding to the devastating fire at Robbins Lumber last month.

Wayne’s courage and dedication reflect the very best of Maine’s firefighters. Every day, these brave men and women put themselves in harm’s way to protect our families, businesses and communities. Their service demands extraordinary courage, and their sacrifices must never be forgotten.

Searsmont Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Woodbury, 76, suffered serious injuries after responding to a devastating fire on May 15 at Robbins Lumber.

I had the opportunity to meet with Lewiston Police Chief Carly Conley and Sgt. Corey Jacques of the Youth and Family Services unit. We discussed the problem of violence amongst juveniles. The current system regarding juvenile delinquents is broken. Violent repeat offenders who are as young as 13 often face virtually zero consequences.

There needs to be a system in place that holds these kids accountable and makes the streets safer. We are seeing if legislation is necessary and will be holding more meetings in the future with other departments.

This morning, I presented a Legislative Sentiment to Auburn resident Frank Dregallo, congratulating him on his 100th birthday, which he celebrated yesterday. Frank is a Marine Corps veteran and was a schoolteacher for 40 years. Happy birthday, Frank!

This is what happens when the administration and the legislative majority fail to prioritize the basics. Instead of fully funding critical infrastructure, they chose pet projects and one-time $300 election-year checks for certain eligible residents from the Budget Stabilization Fund. Now Maine is looking at delayed road and bridge work, higher long-term costs and uncertainty for workers and communities that depend on these projects.

The Maine Department of Transportation plans to cut $400 million in projects, affecting the construction industry and creating delays for state projects.

I had the privilege of presenting a couple of Legislative Sentiments at the Auburn City Council meeting on Monday. Congratulations to Charlie DeAngelis, who retired after 46 years of service as Auburn's city electrician. I also presented a sentiment to Dennis Matthews recognizing him for receiving the 2025 Maine Fraternal Order of Police President's Award. Congratulations!

Thanks to MSA Safety, formerly Globe, for giving me and Representative Quentin Chapman a tour of their Auburn manufacturing facility where they manufacture footwear for firefighters. A great company that employs about 60 employees in Auburn!
