As a former paramedic, I saw firsthand how substance use disorder affects individuals, families and entire communities.

On International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember those we have lost, support people in recovery and recommit ourselves to expanding treatment, prevention and harm-reduction resources without stigma.

For information about available support, call 211. For immediate emotional or behavioral-health crisis support, call or text 988. If someone may be overdosing, call 911.

Women’s Equality Day is an opportunity to celebrate the women who have fought for equal rights — and to recognize that the work toward full equality continues.

I am grateful for the women leading families, businesses, schools, municipal governments and community organizations throughout the Lakes Region, as well as the remarkable women with whom I serve in the Maine Senate.

I’m truly honored to receive Maine Audubon’s Wildlife Champion Award.

This work grew out of a years-long shoreland zoning case in the Town of Raymond that cost the town more than half a million dollars. We turned that experience into two bipartisan laws giving communities stronger tools — and the financial support — to protect Maine’s lakes, rivers, streams and wildlife habitat without leaving local property taxpayers to shoulder enormous legal bills.

Thank you to Maine Audubon, the Town of Raymond and everyone who helped move this work forward. Protecting clean water and the natural resources that define Maine will always be worth fighting for.

This is exactly why I sponsored Maine’s strengthened mobile home park law.

The 31 households at Hidden Circle in Jay came together to purchase their park, becoming the first community to use the law’s right of first refusal. Instead of leaving their future in the hands of an outside investor, residents now control the land beneath their homes and have a real say in what happens to their neighborhood.

Congratulations to the Hidden Circle residents for organizing, sticking with it and showing other Maine communities what is possible.

Maine’s $300 affordability payments are being mailed to eligible residents, so keep an eye on your mailbox.

You can use Maine Revenue Services’ online tool to review the eligibility requirements and check the status of your payment. The site also explains what to do if your address has changed or your check has not arrived.

As a member of the Health and Human Services Committee, I believe preventive care should be accessible before an illness becomes a crisis.

Thanks to a new law that took effect this year, Maine’s Universal Immunization Program now provides eligible adults ages 19–64 with access to recommended vaccines through participating health care providers, at no cost to patients or providers. Learn more or find a provider:
