GO Your Way at SkillsUSA — A Successful Moment for Maine’s Future Workforce

The Maine Motor Transport Association (MMTA) was proud to participate in this year’s SkillsUSA Maine State Leadership & Skills Conference, held March 12–13 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. With more than 1,400 registrants from across the state in attendance, the event once again proved to be an incredible display of talent, dedication, and the future of Maine’s skilled workforce.

This year marked an exciting expansion of MMTA’s involvement, as we brought the MMTA Career Exploration Unit directly to the conference floor. The response from students was overwhelmingly positive. Throughout the event, young professionals eagerly stepped inside the unit to experience what a career in trucking can look and feel like. We were especially encouraged by the level of interest, with many students returning multiple times to learn more and improve their talent on the commercial driving simulator.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to our dedicated volunteers—Robert Fernald of Walmart, Ron Round of Bison Transport USA, and Jeremy Burnside of R.H. Foster, who generously gave their time to support this effort. Their willingness to share their experiences and serve as co-drivers on the simulator made a lasting impact on the students. Their enthusiasm, professionalism, and ability to connect with participants truly brought the experience to life.

During the event, MMTA Training Coordinator Randy DeVault once again stepped up to bridge the gap between industry and education by chairing the diesel equipment and technology competition at Eastern Maine Community College. Eight students competed across eight challenging stations, testing their skills among their peers. MMTA congratulates all students in attendance on their outstanding work and wishes the best of luck to the exceptional student advancing to the national competition.

Events like SkillsUSA are critical in building the next generation of Maine’s workforce. By engaging students early through hands-on learning and shared experiences, we can help them discover meaningful, rewarding career paths right here in Maine. We encourage businesses looking to inspire the next generation to take part in this event in the future.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s event a success. We look forward to continuing this momentum and inspiring even more students in the years ahead.

The MMTA Career Exploration Unit recently visited Brunswick High School, to provide a first hand look and knowledge about the opportunities in Maine's trucking industry.

Motivated by what they learned, three students proactively requested an interview with an MMTA member company to gain a firsthand perspective on professional driving and related roles.

Tyler Parke from Northland Bark Mulch generously answered the call. In an engaging interview, Tyler shared an honest look at life as a professional driver:

-Day-to-day responsibilities and routines
-Key expectations from employers
-The genuine challenges (hours, weather, regulations)
-The rewards (independence, competitive pay, essential role in supply chains)

To show what the job and tools look like, Tyler brought in photos of his truck and some of the equipment used when loading freight. His explanation showed how some products start locally and end up on the shelves at their local stores.

MMTA is excited to see what the future holds for these three after being shown what trucking is all about. We hope to welcome these students to our industry in the future.

A huge thank you to Tyler Parke and Northland Bark Mulch for stepping up and supporting our industry's future.

MMTA Members

The trucking industry is essential to Maine’s economy—and the next generation of professionals needs to hear your story.

MMTA is looking for member companies willing to volunteer a team member to join the Career Exploration Unit at upcoming events depending upon the audience/event.

Volunteers may be asked to:

- Give a short presentation sharing their personal experience in trucking;
- Attend job fairs or career events to answer student/participant questions and provide perspective;
- Highlight lessons learned, safety practices, and why a career in trucking is important;
- Emphasize the industry as a whole, not any company specifically.

Any position within your company is welcome!
Drivers, technicians, freight handlers, management, safety, or office staff can all provide valuable insight. However, picking the right person is important for our workforce development efforts to be successful. MMTA is relying on our members to identify the right people for this important task benefiting our entire industry.
