Press Release from Commonwealth’s Attorney Kyle Williamson 10th Judicial Circuit.

A Nelson County jury convicted Defendant, Steven R. Breeden, Jr. (47), of Failure to Register with the S*x Offender Registry and First-Degree Persistent Felony Offender on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, after a one-day trial. Breeden is required to register as a s*x offender for life due to a previous conviction of child molestation in the state of Washington. The underlying case arose when Breeden failed to update the s*x offender registry following his release from jail in Jefferson County for a prior violation of his requirement to register last year. After deliberation, the jury sentenced Breeden to a twenty-year prison sentence pursuant to the Kentucky Persistent Felony Offender Statute. The case was investigated by Detective Walter Wetzel, of the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Elected Commonwealth’s Attorney Kyle Williamson, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Brooke Talley, and First Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jason Floyd. Williamson stated, “We are grateful for the hard work of both the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office and the Kentucky State Police in helping to bring a convicted child molester to justice for failing to register on the s*x offender registry.”

Community Alert: Assistance Needed to Locate Missing Bardstown Resident, Shane David Helm

He is 33 years old, stands 6' 2" tall, and weighs between 200–230 lbs. He has numerous tattoos.

​Initial Disappearance and Concerning Communications:

​Shane David Helm was last seen/heard from under concerning circumstances. He was initially reported missing after failing to meet his mother in Bardstown, KY, as planned. Shortly thereafter, his mother received a text message claiming he was at a hotel in Lexington, KY, with a woman.

​Recovery Center Interaction and Subsequent Travel:

​Following this, Shane contacted the MARC Recovery Center in Bowling Green, KY, reporting a relapse and requesting assistance. He was successfully transported to get supplies but left the facility after two days. While on the streets of Bowling Green, he contacted his mother via FaceTime, stating that his girlfriend was arranging an Uber to collect him.

​Conflicting Information and Investigative Inconsistencies:

​The final contact occurred on April 8, 2026, via an unknown phone number. During this call, his mother noted that Shane sounded "strange." He claimed to have married his girlfriend and stated they were living in Hazard, KY, where he alleged he was employed at Little Caesars and his wife was employed at Zaxby's. Subsequent investigation by his mother confirmed these details were inaccurate; there is no Zaxby's in that area, and staff at the local Little Caesars had no record of his employment.

​Digital Silence and Unconfirmed Relocation:

​Following the April 8th call, Shane ceased all social media activity. His mother has received emails she believes were not authored by him. There is unconfirmed information suggesting the individuals involved may have relocated to Tennessee.

​Law Enforcement Involvement:

​Missing persons reports have been filed with both the Bardstown Police Department and the Lexington Police Department.

​Status of Search Efforts:

​Family members remain unable to establish contact with Shane or his girlfriend, and his welfare remains a primary concern.

SCAM ALERT: Fake Federal Warrants and Jury Duty FinesBe on high alert for an active scam involving fraudulent legal documents threatening immediate arrest for missing jury duty. Scammers are circulating realistic-looking documents—often labeled as an Arrest Warrant from the "United States District Court" or "The Supreme Court"—claiming you failed to appear for jury service, are in contempt of court, and must pay a monetary sanction (such as $2,000).

Important facts to remember:
No calls or text messages:
Law enforcement and court officials will never call or text you to notify you of an outstanding warrant or demand payment over the phone.
No immediate electronic payments:
Legitimate federal or local courts will never demand immediate payment via phone, text, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift cards to cancel an arrest warrant.
Red flags on the document:
Fraudulent notices often mix different court names together (such as placing "The Supreme Court" seal onto a District Court warrant or referencing a nonexistent "Superior Court of the United States") to look intimidating.

What to do if you are contacted:
Do not pay: Do not send money, gift cards, or wire transfers.Do not share personal info:
Never confirm or provide your Social Security number, banking details, or address.Hang up and verify independently:

If you receive a call or text claiming you have a warrant, hang up immediately. Contact your local clerk of court or law enforcement agency directly using an independently verified phone number—never call back numbers provided in suspicious texts or voicemails.

I appreciate the staff at the NCSO so so much. They wanted to create a culture in the agency and gentlemen you have done that. Around 75% of the law enforcement staff took a version of a physical fitness test and passed, we had two that missed the cut by a small margin but it wasn't because they didn't try or didn't give an effort. The other will take it next week. Im super proud of Capt Brian Voils for taking the physical fitness test twice in the same day and going back to pick up his troops. I myself passed but pulled a hamstring in the last event but perseverance paid off. Proud Sheriff and thank you for the culture shock.
