Big Horn County Library- Basin The Big Horn County Library was created in 1907 by the Book Lovers’ Club, an organization created by a group of women in Basin, WY in 1906.

The library first opened to the public in the spring of 1907 in a room in the Big Horn County Bank Building.

SEPTEMBER 2026 CALENDAR + READING CHALLENGE!

Can you believe it?! September is already just around the corner! Before we officially flip the calendar, we wanted to give you a little head start on all the fun coming up at the library!

Save the September calendar and reading challenge right from this post, or stop by the library and grab a printed copy. Easy peasy!

A Little Friday Storytime Update!

Starting in September, BOTH of our Friday Storytime groups will begin at 10:30 AM!

Here’s where everyone will meet:

* Littles (ages 0–5): Children’s Area, as usual
* Elementary (ages 5+): Upstairs, as usual

Having both groups happening at the same time will help make Fridays a little more efficient for everyone—and, of course, still packed with stories, activities, and fun!

September’s Weekly Themes

We’ve got four weeks of exploring, learning, creating, and discovering!

🎨 Week 1: The Arts
🔬 Week 2: Science
🌎 Week 3: Ecology
🏛️ Week 4: History & Culture

And here’s the really fun part: our storytimes, activities, AND reading challenge will all tie into these weekly themes!

So grab your calendars, sharpen those pencils, and get ready for a September full of reading, creativity, curiosity, and discovery! We can’t wait to see you at the library!

LEGO CLUB: TORNADO DAY!

Things got a little wild at LEGO Club today… literally!

Miss Trista kicked things off by reading "The Three Little Pigs" to get everyone thinking about one very important question: Can you build a house strong enough to survive the Big, Bad Wolf… or, in our case, a TORNADO?!

The kids split into teams and got to work designing and building their LEGO houses. They carefully constructed, reinforced, and engineered their homes, hoping they could stand up to the ultimate test: the mighty “tornado” (aka leaf blower)!

Once construction was complete, everyone backed up and waited for the big test. Miss Trista transformed into the Big, Bad Wolf and let that “tornado” rip!

AND GUESS WHAT?! NOT ONE HOUSE BLEW DOWN!

Our LEGO engineers absolutely crushed it! Their creativity, teamwork, and construction skills were seriously impressive.

A HUGE thank-you to our wonderful volunteers, Diane and Julie, for all their help today! From helping with both storytimes and reshelving books to pitching in with all of our activities, we are so grateful for everything you do.

We LOVE building, creating, experimenting, and having a little (or a lot of!) fun with your kiddos during LEGO Club. We feel pretty lucky to get to hang out with these awesome young builders!

Storytime Friday!

For our littles: Miss Christie read "Farmer McPeepers and His Missing Milk Cows" by Katy S. Duffield. After the story, the kids got creative with coloring, glue sticks, and safety scissors to make their very own cows! And let us tell you… these were some seriously colorful cows!

We also got to see some wonderful kindness in action. A few of our older kids jumped in to help the littles with cutting and gluing. We love seeing our library friends helping one another!

For our bigger kids: Miss Trista shared Shel Silverstein’s "The Missing Piece Meets the Big O." Then it was time to get a little messy! The kids used finger paint to make handprints that will soon become “friendship leaves” on our library bulletin board tree. We can’t wait to watch our tree change with the seasons!

And there was plenty of curiosity to go around as the kids had a blast exploring with the microscope that was generously provided by the Big Horn County Library Board. Tiny things + big imaginations = lots of fun!

As always, we absolutely LOVE reading and learning with your kids! Thank you so much for bringing them to Storytime and making our Fridays so special.

And a huge THANK YOU to our amazing volunteers and parents who are always ready to lend a hand. Your help means the world to us!

We've received word that Libby, the free digital reading app that lets you listen to audiobooks and read ebooks through the library system, is down today (Friday, Aug 28). It is expected that the app will be operational again tomorrow (Saturday, Aug 29.)

Do you know that the library in Basin has a monthly book club?

We meet on the last Wednesday of every month at 3 PM, and this month’s discussion was a good one!

We read "Under the Tulip Tree" by Michelle Shocklee, and it was so interesting hearing everyone’s thoughts—the likes, the dislikes, the emotions, the frustrations…we covered it all! There’s nothing quite like a great conversation about a book!

Next month’s pick: "Stranded: A Story of Frontier Survival" by Matthew P. Mayo.

And a little reminder: If you’d rather listen to your book or read it on your device, there are often audiobooks and/or ebooks available through Libby! No need to check out a physical copy from us.

Tacos, books, and a whole lot of community spirit!

On Saturday, August 15, the Friends of the Basin Library hosted their annual Taco Dinner Fundraiser, while the library held a fantastic book sale! Even with some stormy skies rolling in, our wonderful community showed up in true Big Horn Basin fashion to support the library.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who helped make the event such a success—the Friends of the Basin Library, Jen and her family, our amazing volunteers, and, of course, everyone who came out to enjoy some tacos, browse some books, and support our library!

We’re so grateful for this wonderful community!

Chess, anyone?

Did you know our library has Chess Club every third Friday of the month?

Today, the chessboards were buzzing! We started with some expert instruction from Jared—the guru of chess—and then the kids put those new skills to work.

As librarians, one of our favorite parts was hearing all the happy sounds drifting down from upstairs while the club was in full swing. And a big thank you to Jared for sharing his chess wisdom and to all the kids for pitching in and cleaning up afterward!

Storytime Friday!

We had another fun-filled Storytime Friday!

For the littles: We read "Pete the Cat and the Missing Cupcakes" and then got crafty, making our very own colorful paper cupcakes!

For the big kids: We dove into "The Bigfoot Field Guide to Campers" and then put our creativity to work by designing our own custom color-by-number pages!

A HUGE thank-you to Miss Christie and Miss Trista for leading storytime these past two weeks (at least! 😉). And, as always, thank you to our wonderful volunteers Diane and Julie and the parents for all of your help and support each and every week. We couldn't do it without you! ❤️

The kids wanted to take pictures with all the stuffed animals, so of course we obliged! ;-)

Calling All Young Writers!

It’s time to grab your pencils, fire up your creativity, and get ready for the Veterans Day Essay Competition, sponsored by the 21CCLC Beyond the Bell After-School Program!

Who can participate?
ALL students in grades 3–12 who live in Big Horn School District #4! You do not have to attend the after-school program to enter. Homeschool students who live within the district are welcome, too!

Competition Opens: October 20, 2026
Entries Due: November 6, 2026

Turn your essay in to the Beyond the Bell After-School Program. Have questions? Contact Nova Christopherson. Check the attached image for her contact information.

Do you know that the Big Horn County Library in Basin has a seed library?!

Yep—your next garden adventure might be just a library visit away! We’ve got a lovely selection of flowers, vegetables, and herbs ready for you.

We've made use of an old card catalog (remember those?) to organize the seeds for you! Just sign the paper, take what you need, and get growing! And if you have seeds to share, we’d love for you to leave some behind, too.

A big thank you to Valley Hardware of Basin for donating seed packets so we can share them with our wonderful community!
