Heading into the Storm: The History of LBI’s Life-Saving Stations 🌊⚓

Long before high-tech radar and modern Coast Guard helicopters, the shores of Long Beach Island were lined with brave surfmen who put their lives on the line to rescue shipwrecked sailors.

In the 19th century, treacherous sandbars and fierce Atlantic storms earned the New Jersey coastline a grim reputation. To combat the constant threat of shipwrecks, the U.S. Life-Saving Service established stations along LBI—including key locations like Harvey Cedars, Surf City, Ship Bottom, Beach Haven, and Holgate.

What made these stations so vital?

24/7 Beach Patrols: Every night and during thick fog, surfmen walked the desolate beaches, keeping a watchful eye for distress flares or ships aground.

The Lyle Gun & Breeches Buoy: When seas were too rough to launch a boat, crews fired a line over stranded ships using a small cannon (the Lyle gun) to pull sailors ashore one by one in a canvas ring.

Unmatched Bravery: Armed with heavy wooden surfboats and sheer willpower, these crews adhered to their unofficial motto: "You have to go out, but you don't have to come back."

In 1915, the U.S. Life-Saving Service merged with the Revenue Cutter Service to form the modern United States Coast Guard. Today, historic stations like the Barnegat Light Coast Guard Station and preserved local landmarks stand as lasting testaments to the heroic legacy of LBI’s first responders.
