09JUN26: MEDICAL CENTER METRO CLOSURE: Metro Red Line closure this summer and the impact on installation commuters.

BLUF:
* Major disruption ahead: From July 6 through September 6, Metro Red Line service will be suspended between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights.
* Long-term upgrade: This two-month closure allows WMATA to safely construct the new connection to the Maryland Purple Line.
* Closed stations: Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center, and Bethesda stations will be completely closed.
* Direct impact: If you rely on the Medical Center stop, you must alter your commute to an open station on either end of the closures (North Bethesda and Friendship Heights).
* Plan for delays: Surface transit takes longer than rail. You must factor extra time into your daily commute. Figure up to 10 minutes per stop with 20-30 minutes extra.

The Workaround (Shuttles):
* Free replacements: Metro is providing free shuttle buses running every 5 to 8 minutes during operating hours.
* Two shuttle options:
* Local Shuttles: Stop at all affected stations, including Medical Center. Use this to get to the base.
* Express Shuttles: Run directly between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights if you are bypassing the closed stations entirely.

Base Impact:
There may be a temporary, measurable increase in installation traffic during this period if some commuters choose driving over mass transit. NSAB leadership and security will be closely monitoring traffic flow and parking capacity during the first week of the closure to assess operational impacts.

Telework Guidance:
If you believe your specific commuting situation warrants consideration for situational telework or alternative work schedules, you must follow normal procedures. Please use your chain of command to discuss your concerns and explore authorized options.

Bottom Line:
Please be proactive: Talk to your supervisors now. Review your schedules, adjust your departure times, and ensure your mission requirements are met despite the transit friction.
