Betsie Valley District Library said this so beautifully. The Darcy Library of Beulah shares these sentiments. We will continue to celebrate Dolly in January for her birthday and help you get signed up for the Imagination Library. Her legacy will live on through all of us. 🦋💎📘🎤🎥🎠🎼

Today, our hearts are broken at the Betsie Valley District Library, as we learn of the passing of the legendary Dolly Parton at age 80. While the world sings along to her music, public libraries will forever cherish her as a fierce champion for children and reading. Through her Imagination Library, Dolly mailed millions of free books to children across the globe—including right here in our Michigan community—sparking a lifelong love for reading in countless young minds. Dolly once said, “The magic of reading can take you anywhere you want to go.” Thank you, Dolly, for sharing your magic with us. Rest in peace, Dolly. We will always love you!

Our third Monarch butterfly emerged from the chrysalis. Luckily we had a couple of youngsters help us release her.

And note in the background of the first picture - the chrysalis next to the new hatched butterfly is dark - this means we will likely have another release tomorrow!🦋🦋🦋

What another great Wednesday morning All about Birds! We started with the story, "A Chickadee Year" by Bill O. Smith and " Bird Calls" by Frank Gallo. Jodi from the Benzie Conservation District came by and brought some great hands-on activities that simulated the many different bird beaks. We also made some felt birds - and a nest. Lastly, we made some bird feeders with some peanut butter and seed.

We also had our Feeding America West Michigan Gather 2 Grow lunch program afterward.

Next week we will do a program on Gardens (10:30am), followed by the Gather 2 Grow lunch program (11:30am). Next week Wednesday will be our last Wednesday lunch program.

We have new books to check out!

What a treat this morning! Benzie Conservation District brought their Build a Bug program to us. Miss Kris started with some books, "The Monarch" by Kirsten Hall and "The Big Book of Bugs" by Yuval Zommer. Then Kyla from the Benzie Conservation District, talked to us about aquatic bug larvae. She also brought insect puzzle pieces of bugs that could be put together correctly or make up our own bug. She also brought beads, pipe cleaners and google eyes in order to make some insect larvae. Last, but not least, we decorated bug shaped cookies. It was a morning of buggy exploration here at the library!

Join us next week as the Benzie Conservation District will be back with the program, All about Birds. It will be another fun, hands-on exploration.

Have you noticed all the monarch butterfies and caterpillars this year?!!? It seems we have had a bumper year. We have 4 caterpillars, 2 of which have already made a chrysalis. Two more are in the J position ready to shed their skins. We have nature right here up close and personal for you to observe. We will keep you posted on thier progress. 🐛🦋

We have new books!

Wednesday we had another event that was Unearth a Story themed. Arrayscape made a server specifically for the Summer Reading Program theme, which they tweaked a little, Unearth the Giants. We had about 10 devices that were connected to their exclusive server (we were the only one on it and playing) that had specific tasks - first each person had to find a dig site and unearth some bones with a brush (none of us had used a brush before - a shovel would not do). We then moved to piecing together prehistoric giants to make the ultimate museum. Lastly, each person was able to create something in game before signing off. One thing I will say about this exercise is that even though the kids were on devices, they talked to each other, showed each other what they did and tried to help each other out. It was a creative, team building activity. Thank you to those that came and brought their own devices. We appreciated your patience as we tried to get everyone set up and on the server.

Keep an eye out after school starts as we will reup the Minecraft guild. If you have your own device to bring, that is helpful (the library only has 3 devices that can support Minecraft play). We will play on our own server that is only open to those that are physically here and invited. We play Bedrock edition.

Next week will have the Benzie Conservation District out to learn about bugs as we Build a Bug. It should be another fun Wednesday morning this summer at the library. Afterward, we will have our summer lunch program, Gather 2 Grow, brought to our community by Feeding America West Michigan.
