The Pathways Early Learning Center offers a Montessori-inspired curriculum that continually empowers our students to become caring global citizens. From understanding the significance of conservation to learning how small actions can make a big difference, every lesson plants a seed for a greener, more sustainable tomorrow. Celebrating Earth Day isn't just about learning- it's about shaping a more beautiful tomorrow for the very individuals who will inherit our planet.

Healthcare isn't just a luxury; it's a fundamental human right. For women and children without stable housing, accessing healthcare becomes an uphill battle. From routine check-ups to life-saving treatments, they deserve equal access without barriers.

We break these barriers by bringing the services to Pathways. Thank you to EmVenio Research , UAB, Birmingham AIDS Outreach , Cooper Green, Alabama Regional Medical Services , and others who make this possible!

Parenting is stressful in the best of circumstances; can you imagine parenting while experiencing homelessness? April is Child Abuse Prevention month and, because the children we serve at Pathways are the most statistically likely to encounter child abuse and neglect, Pathways implemented in-house Parent Education classes through funding from the Alabama Department of Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention – the Children’s Trust Fund. These classes are not only a way to educate parents on their children’s development but also assist them in managing their frustrations and developing the resiliency necessary to face the challenges of overcoming homelessness while parenting. We are privileged to help celebrate the triumphs as we navigate this journey together!

Every woman deserves to feel dignified and unashamed of her personal hygiene, especially during menstruation. Sadly, for women experiencing homelessness, access to menstrual products is a far too often overlooked barrier to this sense of self-esteem, and it’s time to change that. Thank you to for ensuring that ALL women, regardless of circumstance or background, have access to the essentials that they need for health and hygiene.

In the heart of Pathways, we dedicate the “Empower Room” to the heart beat of our organization: Ms. Earnestine Adams. Ms. Earnestine’s unwavering commitment to uplifting and serving women and children at Pathways echoes through the stories of countless women who found solace and strength under her guidance. For more than two decades, Ms. Earnestine has served as a living testament to the words “we are more powerful when we empower others.” Today, we honor her legacy by creating a haven where our ladies find peace, strength, and renewal on their journeys out of homelessness.

Ms. Earnestine shared that her greatest joy during her time at Pathways has been witnessing the opening and growth of our Early Learning Center. With her background in early childhood education, she has always had a passion for access to quality education in underserved communities. She is grateful to be a part of an organization that provides accessible childcare of the highest quality to children who are experiencing homelessness.

Our ladies in Stepping Stones held a special celebration for their Day of Love last week, in which they uplifted one another, recognized all of their individual accomplishments, and honored the beauty of their similarities and differences. Women who are experiencing homelessness are in flight or fight mode and rarely take time to care for themselves or celebrate the little victories.

Congratulations to Nadia for being Employee of the Month! We are so lucky to have her on our team.

When asked why she likes working at Pathways, Nadia stated, "My experiences, especially as a young child and getting adopted, have left me with a massive heart for children going through trauma. Having experienced difficult things as a child, I understand how they affect them as adults. People always say you should be the adult you needed as a child, and Pathways gives me the opportunity to do exactly that. I get to be the safe place, the adult who pours love into these kids, and that makes a lasting impact that some people don't realize. Watching firsthand how love and care can transform our students experiencing homelessness is the most fulfilling and beautiful thing I've ever experienced. It's an amazing feeling to know that I'm helping to create a better future for our students. I'm proud to be part of this organization and to see the results of our mission. I'm grateful for the opportunity to make a difference!"

Our sincerest appreciation to all who stood with us at the Sponsor a Child event last week. Your presence and support have ignited a profound transformation in the lives of the women and children we are serving at the Pathways Early Learning Center. Through your generosity, we’re not merely offering assistance, but instead, sculpting a path to lasting change and empowerment.

“If help and salvation are to come, they can only come from the children, for the children are the makers of men. The child is endowed with unknown powers, which can guide us to a radiant future. If what we really want is a new world, then education must take as its aim the development of these hidden possibilities.”
-Dr. Maria Montessori

About Pathways

Pathways is a shelter for women and children experiencing homelessness in downtown Birmingham. Founded in 1985, Pathways is the oldest, continuously-operating organization serving homeless women and children in Birmingham during daytime hours. At Pathways, we are empowering women and children on their path out of homelessness through hospitality, housing, and hope. We offer three programs that work together to meet the immediate and long-term needs of the women and children we serve.

Pathways Day Center

Pathways Day Center provides a safe and welcoming place where any homeless woman or child, whether sleeping outside or staying in a local emergency shelter, can come during daytime hours to eat lunch, take a shower, do laundry, receive fresh clothing and hygiene products, take educational classes, and receive case management services. The Day Center is open 365 days a year, including all weekends and holidays. Volunteers are invited to serve lunch to Day Center guests or help in the Clothes Closet.
