Science Mill at the Library | Wednesday, June 24 | 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM

The Science Mill is bringing two dinosaur-themed STEM activities to the Blanco Library: one science experiment and one make-and-take experience! Kids will become paleontologists as they investigate what dinosaurs ate in Dino Diet Detective, using simple chemistry to test mystery samples and uncover surprising clues about prehistoric diets. Then, in Eggs-cavation Station, they’ll create their own dinosaur egg, hide a mini dino inside, and take it home to harden, where they can “excavate” it like a real fossil discovery.

How much rain did you get?
... We got it all.

Today is the longest day of the year - the Summer Solstice. Texas will receive 15 hours of daylight today. In Blanco County, this day was preceded by a month of sweet summer showers that brought nearly 6 inches of rainfall to our landscape.

At the Paradise Creek Pocket Meadow, those rains didn’t surge downstream as muddy brown runoff. Instead, deep-rooted native grasses slowed, captured, and filtered the water, allowing it to soak deep into the earth, replenish the springs beneath our feet, and eventually return as crystal-clear flow feeding the Blanco River.

In our part of the waterhood, we estimate the meadow captured nearly 150,000 gallons of rainwater in the month of June alone. Not bad for a patch of "overgrown" grass.

Our volunteer crew is taking a well-deserved break today for Father's Day and will return next week to continue work on this educational wildscape.

In the meantime, our thanks to the ones who made it all possible: Drought Proof Texas, Keep Blanco Beautiful, Blanco County Conservation Initiative, Highland Lakes Master Naturalists, Blanco Valley Wildlife Management Association, our volunteers who give their hours freely, and the donors who put their money where their heart is.
