What species of flea beetles are you seeing in your canola fields—crucifer flea beetle or striped flea beetle?

Recent NDSU research found that striped flea beetles are more tolerant of neonicotinoid and diamide insecticide seed treatments than crucifer flea beetles. This highlights the importance of scouting fields regularly and correctly identifying the species present.

If canola is in the seedling to 4–6 leaf stage and defoliation exceeds 20–25%, a well-timed foliar insecticide application is recommended. At this stage of the season, foliar-applied insecticides, such as bifenthrin applied at the high labeled rate, are the primary management option.

NDSU research has shown that pyrethroid insecticides remain effective against both flea beetle species. However, because adult flea beetles can remain active through late June, additional applications may be needed if feeding continues.

Keep scouting and monitor fields closely to protect young canola plants.
