Medicaid Night — October 8

Do you need help completing a Medicaid application or understanding the application process? We’re here to help!

Please bring all important forms and required documentation with you so our team can best assist you.

Please note: Applications will not be processed or approved at this event, and aid will not be granted on site. This event is designed to provide families with assistance in completing the Medicaid application process.

A Food Bank Resource Fair will also be available during the event, providing families with information about additional community resources.

The City of Cape Girardeau has canceled the upcoming public input meetings regarding potential tourism fund projects as staff and partners continue to review the community's needs.

The meetings previously scheduled for:

Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Osage Centre
Wednesday, Oct. 7, at City Hall

will no longer be held.

Residents who would like to provide feedback or submit ideas for tourism projects, or any city business, may still do so at www.cityofcape.org/comment.

The City of Cape Girardeau invites residents to share their ideas and provide feedback on the next tourism fund projects. Two public input meetings will be held:

Thursday, Oct. 1 | Osage Centre | 5–7 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 7 | City Hall | 5–7 p.m.

Both sessions are open house format, allowing residents to drop in at any time between 5 and 7 p.m. to share project ideas, ask questions, and review proposals under consideration.

“We want to hear from the community about what gets them to visit cities like Cape Girardeau, and what else we could do to bring more tourists to town,” said Parks and Recreation Director Doug Gannon.

Tourism projects are funded by the Restaurant Tax, which has supported numerous community projects, including the Cape Girardeau SportsPlex. The SportsPlex brings more than 39,000 visitors to Cape Girardeau annually, contributing to the local economy.

These public input sessions are part of a comprehensive process to identify the project most likely to produce the highest return on investment for local businesses and residents. The City Council will have to approve the final recommendation by January 4, 2027, for it to potentially be put to voters as early as April 2027. Residents unable to attend either meeting are encouraged to provide input at any time at www.cityofcape.org/comment.

Why do you coach recreational sports?
As a kid, I played recreational sports and had the best time playing sports but also making new friends and learning skills that would make me successful in life. It was a big part of my childhood. I’m hoping I can share a little bit of that love of the game and fun with the team I coach. Also, growing up in Cape Girardeau myself, I wanted a way to give back to my community. Investing in children’s development can shape everyone’s future in a positive way.

How important is winning in recreational sports?
As a very competitive person, I obviously love to win. However, for my athletes, it’s growing from each game and learning, and if we can accomplish that I feel very successful.

Any advice for new coaches?
Find one positive and one way to grow from each game. The ultimate goal is to get the kids to be excited about the game and come back again next year. Any words of wisdom? Let’s all find ways to get every child involved in sports in an accessible way!

Six years before Roswell, a story emerged from Cape Girardeau about a mysterious craft crashing outside the city and the Rev. William G. Huffman being called to the scene to pray over victims said to be unlike anything human. Over time, reports of military involvement, a missing photograph, and family testimony passed down through generations turned the incident into one of Cape Girardeau’s most enduring mysteries.
