On June 5, 2026, members of the community joined Cape Girardeau Police Chief Adam Glueck and Community Partnership of Southeast Missouri Director Ryan Ess*x at the former Cape Girardeau Police Headquarters, located at 40 S. Sprigg Street, to open a time capsule that had been sealed within the building's cornerstone since 1975. Today, the historic building is owned by CPSEMO.
Inside the time capsule were several pieces of Cape Girardeau history, including a Cape Girardeau Police Department roster from 1975, a list of construction workers who were present when the cornerstone was placed, two different styles of Chief badges and two commemorative badges honoring Patrolman Donald Crittendon and Auxiliary Sergeant Herbert Goss, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty following a gun battle on March 10, 1961.
The discovery of the department roster provided a unique glimpse into the men who wore the badge more than fifty years ago. Those officers answered the calls for service, protected our community, and helped shape the traditions, professionalism, and values that continue to guide the Cape Girardeau Police Department today. Their dedication laid the foundation upon which future generations of officers have continued to build.
The commemorative badges serve as a reminder of two officers whose sacrifice remains forever woven into the history of this department. Auxiliary Sergeant Herbert Goss was killed during the exchange of gunfire on March 10, 1961, and Patrolman Donald Crittendon succumbed to his injuries eleven days later on March 21, 1961. Their courage and commitment to duty continue to inspire those who serve today.
More than fifty years after these items were placed inside the cornerstone, they remind us that our history is not simply found in buildings or artifacts, but in the people who served before us. From the officers listed on the 1975 roster to those who gave their lives in service to our community, each played a role in shaping the Cape Girardeau Police Department into what it is today.
We are honored to preserve their legacy and share their story with future generations.
