Quazerious Murray, 21, of Cape Girardeau, has been charged by the Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in connection with the September 27, 2026, shooting in downtown Cape Girardeau that resulted in the death of 17 year old Keyon Malcom, of Parma, MO and injuries to three additional individuals.

Murray is currently in custody and charged with second degree murder, three counts of first degree assault, and four counts of armed criminal action.

On September 27, 2026, officers responded to reports of shots fired on Main Street shortly after 2:00 a.m. Investigators with the Cape Girardeau/Bollinger Major Case Squad reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses during the investigation. The investigation identified Murray as the suspected shooter.

A $1,000,000 arrest warrant was issued on September 29, 2026 signed by Circuit Judge Julia M. Koester.

On September 27, 2026, at approximately 2:00 A.M. officers were patrolling the downtown area when they heard multiple gunshots in the 0-100 – Block of N. Main.

Responding officers located two victims that suffered gunshot wounds, one juvenile, and one adult. Officers provided medical attention to both victims until medical personnel arrived and the juvenile was transported to an area hospital for further treatment by EMS. The adult victim was transported to an area hospital by a third party.

Officers were later advised by emergency room staff two additional adult victims arrived at the hospital with gunshot wounds.

The juvenile was later pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

At this time, no arrests have been made.

More than 70,000 people attended this year's fair, and from a law enforcement standpoint, it was a great week!

𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐲

On September 19, 2026, at about 5:15 a.m., officers with the Cape Girardeau Police Department responded to the intersection of Independence and Caruthers for a report of a weapon violation. Communications advised officers they received several reports of a male subject armed with a hatchet running at vehicles.

Officers arrived on scene and observed, Charles McDonald IV, (49) of St. Louis crouching down in a bush behind a shopping cart. Officers told McDonald to show his hands and McDonald stood up and retrieved a hatchet from the shopping cart. The officer on scene gave multiple commands to McDonald to drop the hatchet and McDonald refused.

As another officer arrived on scene, McDonald began to approach that officer. Other officers arriving on scene utilized their Taser in an attempt to subdue McDonald. Six Tasers made good contact with McDonald but did not have the desired effect. McDonald began to run from officers, crossing the street where another officer deployed his Taser and had the desired effect in order to take McDonald into custody.

McDonald was taken into custody and transported to the Cape Girardeau Police Department for booking procedures. McDonald was formally charged through the Cape Girardeau County Prosecutors Office with, class E felony of unlawful use of a weapon and class E felony of resisting an arrest. McDonald is currently being held on a $50,000 cash-only bond.

McDonald also had an active parole violation warrant that he was taken into custody for.

An offense charge is merely an accusation; the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

On September 18, 2026, at about 10:40 a.m., officers with the Cape Girardeau Police Department responded to a residence in the 400-Block of S. Pacific Street after receiving information that a juvenile wanted in connection with multiple ongoing investigations was at the residence.

Through their investigations, officers had developed the juvenile as a suspect in multiple cases, including several shots-fired incidents and multiple stolen vehicle investigations.

Officers arrived at the residence and located the juvenile asleep on the couch. The juvenile was taken into custody.

At the time of his arrest, the juvenile was in possession of a backpack. During a search of the backpack, officers located a semi-automatic handgun with a loaded extended magazine. Officers also recovered evidence believed to be connected to a previous stolen vehicle investigation.

The juvenile was subsequently turned over to juvenile authorities.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department was assisted by the SEMO University Police Department and the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office. We appreciate the continued cooperation of our law enforcement partners in helping bring this investigation to a safe conclusion.

Because the suspect is a juvenile, no identifying information will be released.

This remains an active investigation, and additional information may be released as appropriate.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department wants the community to understand the City’s updated ordinance regarding solicitation and conduct in public places.

Simply asking someone for money is not, by itself, illegal. However, a person cannot physically block pedestrian or vehicle traffic, prevent someone from entering or leaving a location, make offensive or provocative physical contact, or intentionally cause someone to fear immediate physical injury.

If someone asks you for money, you are not required to give them anything. You can say “No, thank you” and continue on your way. If the person becomes threatening, makes prohibited physical contact, or physically prevents you from leaving, move to a safe location and contact law enforcement.

Private property owners may also prohibit solicitation by properly posting the property or telling an individual not to solicit.

In an emergency or if you feel you are in danger, call 911.

Just a couple public safety officers working the Semo District Fair tonight. They are both “Fired Up”

On September 15, 2026, at about 9:50 p.m., officers with the Cape Girardeau Police Department responded to the 100-Block of N. West End Blvd. in reference to shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers located one juvenile victim with gunshot wounds. The juvenile victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
