Public Works provides solid waste and recycling pick up and processing, storm water and sewer maintenance, street maintenance and repair, city fleet maintenance and management, waste water collection, and water treatment and distribution.

🌳 Wind Storm Cleanup Update
The August 12 wind storm left us with quite a mess! Our Street Division crews have spent the past 6½ weeks picking up 570 tons of storm debris and finished the 438th and final location from our list yesterday. Thanks for your patience!
Options for future limb disposal:
• Small twigs (¼" diameter or smaller) - take to the Recycling Center for free
• Larger limbs – take to the Transfer Station - $90/ton (around 4.5¢/lb) with a $25 minimum charge
• Curbside Special Pickups – limbs must be in bundles less than 4’ long and 18" in diameter
🪾Up to 10 bundles: $25
🪾11 or more bundles: $25 + $1.66/minute over the first 10 minutes of collection time

Miller Award, presented by the Missouri Water and Wastewater Association (MWWA). Keith has demonstrated outstanding dedication, loyalty, and leadership while providing exceptional service not only to the citizens of Cape Girardeau but also to the MWWA. This prestigious award is presented to only one individual each year, making it a truly special honor. We are incredibly proud of Keith and grateful for his years of service and commitment to our community and the water and wastewater industry.

We will be closed Monday, September 7, in honor of Labor Day.
Please note the following changes to trash and recycling routes during the holiday week:

Monday routes run Tuesday
Tuesday routes run Wednesday
All other days are on their normal schedule

A huge THANK YOU to everyone working hard out in this heat! ☀️

We truly appreciate the patience and understanding you’ve shown while our crews work to clean up from the recent storm in these hot-weather conditions. And an extra special thank you to the kind people and local businesses who have helped keep our workers going by providing cold water, treats, and even discounts. The Insomnia Cookies and Rally's food is very appreciated.💙

We are unexpectedly short staffed tomorrow so the trash and recycling routes will start at 6:30 AM in an effort to get everything collected. The crew will probably be working late so if your cart is not emptied at its normal time please leave it at the curb. North Sprigg Street between Normal Ave and North St will be closed today (8/13/26) while Alliance Water Resources crews repair a water main break. At this time there is no need for a boil water order. If one is issued we will update this post. 🚛♻️ Our recycling truck is feeling a little under the weather and as a result some recycling routes are running behind. If your recycling isn't picked up today, don't worry just leave your cart at the curb and we'll be back to collect the remaining stops tomorrow.

The traffic signal at Broadway and Perry will be flashing red beginning Monday, July 6th while upgrades are made. This turns the intersection into a three way stop and traffic may be delayed. We expect the work to be complete Wednesday the 8th and the signal should be back to its red/yellow/green cycle. Please be extra careful in the area or use an alternate route.

In observance of Independence Day, we will be closed on Friday, July 3

🗑️ Trash Collection Schedule Changes:
✔️ Thursday routes will be collected on Wednesday
✔️ Friday routes will be collected on Thursday
✔️Other routes will be on their normal days
