Residential Structure Fire — 3000 Block of CR 324
Early Thursday morning at approximately 2:27 a.m., our department was dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 3000 block of CR 324. Initial dispatch information indicated heavy fire involvement with possible injuries to occupants.
Two occupants were home at the time of the fire and awoke to discover the residence on fire. Both occupants were able to quickly escape the structure but sustained injuries while exiting. They made their way to a neighboring residence, where 911 was contacted. County deputies responded to that address and provided initial care to the occupants while fire crews continued fire operations at the scene. ALS CCPA arrived and transported both occupants to a local hospital for further medical treatment.
Due to the nature of the emergency, automatic aid was initiated, bringing Millersville, Whitewater, and Jackson Fire Rescue to the incident. While responding, Gordonville requested a Tanker Alarm to provide additional water supply and manpower. The Tanker Alarm brought additional resources from North Cape County, Delta, Fruitland, and East County.
Jackson Fire Rescue Engine 13 arrived as the first fire unit and reported approximately 75% heavy fire involvement of the residential structure, along with a vehicle fire. Engine 13 established command and initiated defensive operations from the Alpha (front) side of the structure. The crew deployed a 2½-inch attack line and began fire suppression efforts, concentrating on preventing the fire from extending into the uninvolved portion of the residence while also addressing the vehicle and fire in the yard.
Chief 3330 of Jackson Fire Rescue subsequently arrived and assumed command of the incident.
Gordonville Engine 3612 arrived and deployed 500 feet of 5-inch supply line to a dry hydrant located at the end of the driveway. The crew established a water supply operation utilizing drafting. Gordonville Tanker 3615 also arrived on scene to provide additional water supply and operational support.
Once a reliable water supply was established, Engine 13 and Millersville Chief 3510 transitioned to offensive operations. Crews entered the structure utilizing a 1¾-inch handline to conduct a primary search and confirm that fire had not extended into the previously uninvolved portion of the residence.
During the primary search, crews located one dog inside the residence and removed it from the structure. Sadly, the dog had succumbed to smoke inhalation prior to being located.
Additional mutual-aid companies joined the operation as crews continued interior and exterior fire suppression efforts. Firefighters worked to extinguish the remaining fire and subsequently conducted overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and no additional hazards remained.
Crews remained on scene for approximately three hours completing fire suppression, overhaul, and other necessary operations. No firefighter injuries were reported.
Due to the extent of fire involvement and the overhaul needed to verify the fire and hotspots were extinguished the residential was a total loss.
We are thankful that both occupants were able to escape the residence and receive medical attention. We also extend our sincere appreciation to all of the mutual-aid departments and agencies that responded and assisted with this incident.
Incidents involving this level of fire involvement require a coordinated response involving significant manpower, equipment, and water resources. The assistance provided by our mutual-aid partners was instrumental in bringing this incident under control.
