Fayetteville Fire Department

There’s been a lot of discussions and studies lately surrounding the carcinogens we are most likely carrying around in our gear and on our duty uniforms.

Sometimes, without even knowing; we are dragging these cancer causing agents around with us and depositing them everywhere we go in our apparatus, back to the station, in the bunk rooms right beside our bed at nights
Recently we have heard a lot about de-con and washing our gear. The methods to be used and how frequent gear should be washed.

Lately Captain Leonard and Captain Ferguson have been educating the department on measures to take to help decrease the amount of carcinogens we allow to hang around. As you will see below the educational measures are really impacting our department.

Just one example, Captain McBee and her crew at Station 3 on B Shift recently conducted an experiment regarding the cleanliness of our protective hoods. Included is the experiment which Captain McBee and her crew conducted:

1. They only used only hot water and Dawn. We used the same amount of Dawn in each bag.
2. After each bag was tied it was shaken up to agitate the soap.
3. For the bags that had hoods placed in them, the hood was removed after 3 minutes.
4. The pictures do NOT have hoods in them, each pic was taken after the hood had already been taken out.
5. The pictures were taken in the same spot using the same camera and lighting.
6. The hood that is listed as ‘used and not washed’ we picked up from someone’s gear rack, where it was being used as their primary hood. Further, it was stored in between their boots, laying in their bunker pants.

This isn't just a job, it's a family! Our Battalion 6 brothers will be missed dearly!

Yesterday we attended the Celebration of Life for Senior Man Earl Adams Jr. It was an amazing service that truly reflected the man that Earl was. Hundreds of family, friends and fellow Firefighters, both active and retired, attended to pay their final respects to our brother. Also in attendance were Mary and Bonnie Tinsley, the wife and mother of Seth Tinsley who was assigned to Engine 18 C shift with Earl. Seth passed away from Brain Cancer in 2016. Take a moment to watch this video that features both of our guys talking about bringing a Mecklenburg County Sheriff Deputy back to life after he suffered a heart attack while passing through our neighborhood on his way to work. It’s nice to imagine Earl and Seth telling these stories in heaven. Rest Easy Men.

Charlotte Fire Station 18 (The Wild Wild West)

For years the name Earl Adams was synonymous with Station 18. Anyone that walked in the door knew they were going to have one amazing day if he was there. When Earl walked in the room he commanded it. There wasn’t a day that went by that he didn’t have the entire shift crying from laughing or that he didn’t have them mesmerized by a life lesson.

There are so many Earl Adams phrases that float around that firehouse at times you would think he was still standing right beside you.

He was a man’s man. A Marine. A Senior Man. A Proud Father. A proud Son and one of the most amazing card sharks of all times. Most know we play cards to determine who washes dishes and on a daily basis Earl uttered “These hands will touch no water”. It was an extremely rare occasion if they did.

No words can really describe him. His personality was that big. He cared. He genuinely cared for his family, he cared for everyone he worked with and he cared for his fellow man.

After his passing yesterday retired Captain Eddie Black said there would never be another person that could fill the void that Earl has left. There will never be another Earl Adams Jr.

We are better for knowing you. We love you. There will never be another You.

Rest In Peace Brother.... a true Legend.

Yesterday the fire service lost a brother, friend, and a great all around guy. FF Earl Adams Jr. was a fireman’s fireman, the senior guy, but most importantly a humbled, compassionate, and genuine friend. There truly are no words to express just how much this loss hurts.

Earl Adams Jr. was and will always be a legend! Rest easy brother, we'll take it from here.
