Remember when the right wing swore Zohran Mamdani would turn New York City into a lawless hellscape? Fox News ran wall-to-wall coverage warning that a democratic socialist mayor would mean chaos, crime waves, and the collapse of public safety. Republican politicians called him dangerous, radical, unfit to run the largest city in America.
The data is in. NYC just posted the fewest murders in its recorded history, 122 in the first half of 2026, a 24.7% drop from last year and the lowest number ever tracked since the city started keeping CompStat records in 1994. Shootings hit a record low too. So did shooting victims. Major crime is down across all five boroughs, with the Bronx leading the way at over 9%.
This didn't happen despite Mamdani. It happened under his administration, working alongside Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch on a strategy focused on precision policing, going after illegal guns, and dismantling violent gangs, all while simultaneously rolling out free childcare and investing millions in early childhood mental health.
Meanwhile, the fear-mongering crowd who spent months insisting this city would burn to the ground under socialist leadership has gone conveniently quiet now that the numbers are in.
This is what happens when you invest in people instead of just policing them, when housing, childcare, and mental health get treated as public safety issues instead of afterthoughts. New York isn't less safe under a democratic socialist mayor. It's the safest it's ever been.
The right wing owes this city an apology. They won't give one. But the numbers speak louder than their panic ever did.
