Yesterday, I joined Northwest Neighborhoods, the Mayor, and LISC to see the construction progress at Depot on Detroit. If you have driven by Detroit and Berea Road, you have likely seen the construction for this project. A transit oriented development, the Depot will bring 60 units of affordable housing to the Cudell neighborhood. It is steps away from the RTA station, Cudell Rec Center, Cudell Fine Arts, and the soon to open CMSD school, Marion Seltzer.
The Depot is a positive addition for the community with 1-3 bedroom options that will be available for individuals and families making 30-60% of AMI. But, we have to keep the bigger picture in mind. Our own housing plan identifies the need to build 23,000 units by 2030. We will continue to push City Hall to identify a stream of funding and a concrete plan to build affordable housing at the pace our residents need. Public-private partnerships are not enough. We need the public sector to step into this leadership vacuum.
