For over ten years, the Columbia Heights Police Department has provided restored bikes to CHPS students through a bike distribution program. The school social workers and administration identify students to receive the bikes, which are typically given out toward the end of the school year.

This year, ten CHPS students at Columbia Heights High School, Columbia Academy and Valley View Elementary School, were given the bikes and bike locks donated by the CHPD and helmets donated by the Fridley-Columbia Heights Rotary Club!

Thank you to the Columbia Heights Police Department for these bikes for our students!

This week, Columbia Academy held their annual Staff vs. Students Basketball Tournament!

The staff kicked things off yesterday with a 25-10 win over the 6th and 7th graders… but let’s be honest, that was just the warm-up game. 🏀😅

Next up: the 8th graders vs. staff

Columbia Heights Public Schools hosted a Unified Basketball tournament yesterday, where our Hylanders played Edina!

Our amazing Columbia Academy WEB Leaders helped run the event and greeted everyone as they arrived, creating a fun event for everyone involved!

"Special Olympics Unified Basketball is a program where athletes with and without intellectual disabilities play basketball together on the same team, fostering a sense of unity and inclusion. This program is part of the larger Special Olympics movement, which aims to promote social inclusion through sports!" (via the Special Olympics Website).

Columbia Academy recently had four 6th grade band students attend the Central Minnesota Band Directors Association First and Second Year Honor Band Festival! This took place on Saturday, May 9th in Zimmerman, MN.

Participating students in this regional honor band were nominated by their school band director. Columbia Academy nominated eight students this year and four were selected. They were: Andrew Givens, alto saxophone; Pareese Richardson, clarinet; Matias Sagbay Landi, trumpet; and Jackson Surko, trombone.

Students were given a series of concert pieces ahead of time to practice in preparation for the event. On the day of the event, students joined other selected students from approximately 30 other regional middle schools and worked with retired Minnesota band director and composer, Tim Smith. The day ended with a concert for family and friends. It was truly an outstanding experience for our young musicians!

Congratulations to Andrew, Pareese, Matias, Jackson and their director Todd Boyd! They represented Columbia Heights with excellence!

Our 8th grade AVID students at Columbia Academy didn’t just imagine a school garden. They created a plan, presented their proposal, built a timeline, problem-solved every obstacle, collected donations and learned everything they could about planting, composting and sustainability!

The best part? Their vision wasn’t only about making campus beautiful. They wanted to grow vegetables to donate to the CA food shelf and give back to their community. 💙💛

The future is in good hands. 🫶
