The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus is the oldest legislative Black caucus in the nation, leading the fight for justice, equity, and opportunity by championing policies that uplift Black Ohioans and strengthen communities across our state. Since 1967 the members of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus have been on the front-lines, fully committed to fighting for issues important to African Americans in

Ohio. The caucus is dedicated to reforming the criminal justice system, ensuring the fundamental right to vote is not infringed upon, securing a fair playing field for African Americans seeking good-paying jobs, addressing health disparities and strengthening the education system to help ensure a bright future for the next generation of African American/ black leaders here in Ohio. Furthermore, we strive to always be a voice and conscious in the legislature not just for Black Ohioans but all minorities in Ohio, while cultivating a culture that will create strong leadership in the black community and all Ohio in the years to come.

The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) stands in solidarity with Ohio’s Haitian community. ✊🏾

OLBC was founded on the belief that justice must be defended wherever it is threatened. As the oldest Black caucus in the nation, we cannot—and will not—remain silent while our Haitian brothers and sisters are subjected to discrimination and fear. We know that injustice ignored becomes injustice repeated, and we are committed to standing up before history repeats itself.

Ohio is on the rise because its people refuse to settle!

The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) was proud to attend and serve as a sponsor of the Ohio Democratic Party’s Annual Dinner, Ohio on the Rise, alongside more than 1,000 leaders, advocates, volunteers, and changemakers committed to building a stronger Ohio.

From the Statehouse to communities across our state, we remain committed to fighting for quality public education, affordable health care, good-paying jobs, safe communities, and a government that reflects and serves ALL its people!

Today, the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) released a statement in response to gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s public remarks regarding the Jim Crow era.

As the oldest Black Caucus in the nation, we have a responsibility to speak truthfully about our history and stand firmly against efforts to minimize or distort the experiences of Black Americans. Our ancestors endured unimaginable barriers to secure the rights and opportunities many enjoy today, and we will continue to honor that legacy through our advocacy and service.

From our families, to the boardrooms, to the halls of the Ohio Statehouse, Black women have long been architects of progress and champions of change. Today, we celebrate Black liberation by honoring L. Helen Rankin and the generations of women whose sacrifices and leadership made our achievements possible.

More than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, thousands of enslaved people in Texas remained unaware that they were legally free. That changed on June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston and announced that slavery had ended.

For newly freed African Americans, Juneteenth became a day of celebration, reflection, education, and community. Families reunited, churches organized gatherings, and communities created traditions that have been passed down for generations. These celebrations honored both freedom gained and the sacrifices made to achieve it.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, but it is also a call to action.

The generations who came before us fought not only for liberation but also for opportunity, representation, and a voice in shaping the future. Their sacrifices created pathways that continue to benefit communities today.

OLBC President Terrence Upchurch remarks as we commemorate the 161st Anniversary of Juneteenth ✊🏾

Freedom means more than the end of slavery.

Freedom means equitable funding for public schools with predominantly African American students, an end to racial gerrymandering, and the reshaping of the criminal justice system to ensure fair sentencing.

The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) remains steadfast in the fight to secure true freedom, equity, and opportunity for Black Ohioans.

The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) wishes you a Happy Juneteenth! ❤️✊🏾 OLBC’s own, State Senator Hearcel F. Craig honors Juneteenth and our ancestors by raising the Juneteenth Flag on the Ohio Statehouse lawn.

Today, Juneteenth serves as both a celebration and a reminder. It honors the resilience of those who endured slavery while encouraging us to continue working toward a society where freedom, opportunity, and justice are fully realized for everyone.
