The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus is the oldest legislative Black caucus in the nation, leading the fight for justice, equity, and opportunity by championing policies that uplift Black Ohioans and strengthen communities across our state. Since 1967 the members of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus have been on the front-lines, fully committed to fighting for issues important to African Americans in Ohio. The caucus is dedicated to reforming the criminal justice system, ensuring the fundamental right to vote is not infringed upon, securing a fair playing field for African Americans seeking good-paying jobs, addressing health disparities and strengthening the education system to help ensure a bright future for the next generation of African American/ black leaders here in Ohio. Furthermore, we strive to always be a voice and conscious in the legislature not just for Black Ohioans but all minorities in Ohio, while cultivating a culture that will create strong leadership in the black community and all Ohio in the years to come.

The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) is proud to kick off our College Voter Registration Tour at the oldest Historically Black College & University (HBCU) in the Nation, Ohio’s own Wilberforce University! 💚 Thank you to the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. XI Chapter & student organization My Black Purpose for engaging with us on this important issue!

Today we successfully registered over 40 students, talked about the importance of voting, and provided educational materials to prepare them to cast their ballots in November.

At just 20 years old, Pierre Damas Bel had an entire future ahead of him. He should have been beginning college at Wright State, playing soccer, studying neuroscience, and working toward becoming a neurosurgeon.

A young man with so much promise, so many dreams, and so much life ahead of him is no longer here. We mourn Pierre not as a statistic or an immigration case, but as a son, a student, an athlete, and a young person whose future mattered.

Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, and everyone who loved him. Pierre deserved the opportunity to live the life he dreamed of. May his life never be forgotten. 🕊️

Today, the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) concludes its rollout of 2026 General Election endorsements, announcing the remaining candidates the Caucus is proud to support across every level of government.

Columbus, OH - The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) mourns the passing of former Ohio Senator Ray Miller, a trailblazer, fighter, and extraordinary public servant whose presence in the Ohio Statehouse left an enduring mark on our state.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Senator Miller know that he was not simply a legislator who occupied a seat at the table. He was a force at the table. Senator Miller’s story is inseparable from the history of Black political power in Ohio. He came into public service through the legacy of leaders like C.J. McLin, one of the founders of the OLBC, at a time when Black legislators were still fighting simply to have their voices heard within the halls of government. He went on to become one of Ohio’s longest-serving legislators, the dean of the Ohio House, and ultimately the Ohio Senate Minority Leader.

Senator Miller’s legacy can be measured in the institutions and policies that continue serving Ohioans today. He was the chief sponsor of legislation creating the Ohio Commission on Minority Health, the Community Mental Health Act of 1988, and the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services. He recognized health disparities before they became a mainstream policy conversation and fought to make addressing them a responsibility of state government. He didn’t simply identify problems; he built the infrastructure to confront them.

We extend our deepest condolences to Senator Miller’s family, loved ones, friends, former colleagues, and all those who had the honor of working alongside him.

May Senator Ray Miller Rest In Power, and may his legacy continue to inspire those who enter public service with the same courage and determination to make Ohio better for all.
